Hilarious and fun, couldn't put it down

Funny, poignant, and achingly honest, "Does This Baby..." was impossible to put down. Every chapter held new surprises and laugh-out-loud moments that made me feel like I was right there on the rollercoaster of the parenting journey with Dan and his husband. From the uncertainties of how to discuss adoption with two children who are adopted, to how to appropriately flirt as a married, gay dad, Dan Bucatinsky expertly crafts his story in a unique, compelling voice that makes me only hope he will continue to chronicle his family's life as his children grow older. I'd be thrilled to see a Dan Bucatinsky book titled "Does This Teenager Make Me Look Old?" on bookshelves a decade from now!

Entertaining, creative, and sweet

I loved how Bucatinsky wrote straightforwardly and at the beginning of the book exactly how he and his partner came to have their two children, instead of stashing it in a poem on page 157 like a lot of authors. If you want to know how this particular pair of men came to have a family together, read the book! It's funny, thoughtful, and--this is both a strength and a weakness--very much like the myriad other stories out there of other parents' experiences with parenthood.

Dan is such a fabulous writer, you will be smiling and giggling into the night enjoying his valuable insights into human behavior. This is an important book, not only for gays and those accepting of gay lifestyles, but for those who haven't yet been lucky enough to know marvelous gay people and realize how silly their prejudice has been. Bravo Dan!

About the Author
Gerald Coles is an educational psychologist who has written extensively on literacy and learning disabilities. He is the author of Reading Lessons: The Debate Over Literacy, The Learning Mystique: A Critical Look at "Learning Disabilities," as well as numerous articles in educational and psychology journals. Formerly a professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the University of Rochester, he now writes full-time and lives in Ithaca, New York.

good counsel

Dr Coles' book is a sure guide to the thickets, trials and tribulations of learning to read and teaching to read and helpful counselor for parents and professionals. The writing is straight (with an enlivening dry wit) and will take the reader with certainty to an understanding of what occurs in our schools and of what must be done. And with the understanding comes a how-to knowledge that will help all concerned. Dr Coles gives a comprehensible history of the science and mis-science and practices of reading teaching that will enable advocates to present their cause comprehensibly. It tells one where the "experts", good and bad, are coming from and arms one to encounter them capably. Buy this book: you'll like it and use it!

A Clear Update on the Hottest topics in reading

This the second book I have read by Coles and I continued to be impressed by his clarity and incisive thinking. This is a great book for all those who feel so battered about by all the arguements for and against the really topical issues in reading such and phonemic awareness and pathological reasons for reading difficulty to name just a few. Cole's summaries of the most significant research are a Godsend to those who do not have the time or resources to review all the current research themselves. I work as a Literacy Advisor in schools and this book has helped me in my understanding of the issues.

A generation of mis-readers

"Research-based" has become code for "direct-instruction", "phonics only", and "NICHD/Reid Lyon-supported". In Coles' important book, this research is carefully and responsibly examined and discredited. A must for everyone who, in good conscience, is standing up to this recent wave of (as Frank Smith has said) reading nonsense.

Dr. Trimm's best work yet!!!!

Wow. Just wow. I guess what impressed me most about the Prayer Warrior's Way is that it contains powerful teaching and revelation of the same caliber as Dr. Trimm's previous releases like Rules of Engagement and Commanding Your Morning, but her writing here in PWW is soooo much more personal and intimate than before. This is great if you can't make it to her classes or conferences to sit and learn. For me, the difference between her previous works and PWW is like the difference between an awesome academic lecture from a renowned professor and actually being able to sit down with the professor one on one and hear her heart on the subject. The difference between an incredible teaching and having that same teaching received by way of personal mentorship. If you purchase no other title from Dr. Trimm, make sure you get PWW!!! And by the way I DO highly suggest you purchase the others!!! Though the style is different they are must reads as well!

This book has become one of my favorite books on prayer. I refer to during conversations and in meetings. If you are having trouble praying to God this book will give you reasons for feeling that way. Cindy Trimm truly put herself in this book. I remember reading the first few pages and becoming overwhelm with revelation. I not only needed to pray more I wanted to.

The author describes in great detail the many steps that have been taken over many centuries by those in power to manipulate, control, terrify, quantify, observe, categorize and cajole humanity into manageable pigeonhole dwelling "units". It makes you want to immediately read Thoreau.

Foucault is a classic, must-read for any CJ/penology/criminology major. It is a little tedious, but nevertheless an important piece of literature that will help you gain insight into 1) the various forms and processes of punishment; and 2) how punishment has taken shape and evolved throughout history.

The Birth Of Modern Times

"Barely two hundred and fifty years ago a man condemned of attempting to assassinate the King of France was drawn and quartered in a grisly spectacle that suggested an unmediated duel between the violence of the criminal and the violence of the state" (Book Jacket). When compared to the modern tactics of contemporary prison, we can begin to see that we have not merely experienced an evolution, but a fundamental restructuring of our system. What Foucault is able to accomplish in the space of 300 pages is remarkable. We journey from the Medieval power struggles to the knowledge of modern times; a knowledge that has compelled us to abandon this confrontation between offender and offended.

What used to generate latent feelings of power and resoluteness in the mass has undergone a definite process of banalization. In other words, the violent forces meeting in an ultimate showdown of wills has been removed in favor of a shameful and boring "isolationism" for convicts. We follow the different streams of thought and custom, traversing the classical age until we find that "power" ultimately culminated into a new principle of societal order: surveillance. Or as utilitarian reformer Bentham terms it, the "panopticon" (That which sees all). With no words wasted, the style can be rough going, especially as terminology is introduced in the early chapters. However, the last 70 or so pages roar with ferocity through modern ideas and rationalizations of discipline and imprisonment.

It is easy to understand how Foucault was hated by conservative rationalists and system apologists. The approach taken is essentially anarchistic, in the sense that Foucault offers no alternative system and that he does not criticize certain trajectories in favor of others. He is fundamentally opposed to the current civilization (and this extends even beyond his beginnings in the pre-classical systems) Despite this, strong willed readers will appreciate the complete absence of dogma or moralizing rhetoric. In this way, the work is beyond criticism, except perhaps that this kind of knowledge tends to paralyze readers from action.

Ultimately, a close read will provide an unimaginable amount of value. We are shown the themes of modernity as they existed in their nascent stages, without wading through the endless legal and political details. Foucault is explicit that there are of course many other institutions that were ultimately governed by the same power/knowledge including hospitals and schools. I would encourage any active citizen to read this book as they make their way through their journey.

This book is the first major study for fifty years of the evidence for some form of drama in early Scandinavia. Terry Gunnell examines the dialogic poems of the Poetic Edda, preserved in manuscripts from the late thirteenth century, from the viewpoints of both the performer and the audience, and argues that in order to be fully understood by the audience, the poems must have been presented in some dramatic fashion, and not merely chanted. He then points to certain characteristics, found only in the manuscripts of these dialogic poems and in contemporary manuscripts of dramatic works from England and northern France, as further evidence that in the thirteenth century the dialogic poems must have been regarded as dramatic works. This examination is accompanied by what is probably the most complete review to date of the evidence for some kind of ritual drama having existed in pagan Scandinavia. This review looks not only at the archaeological evidence concerning the use of masks and costumes, but also at the information contained in the sagas, and contemporary historical accounts from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In addition to this, a detailed review is made of those later dramatic folk traditions from Scandinavia (including Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Shetland and Orkney) that seem to have ancient roots, such as the traditions of the Yule-goat (julebukk) and the straw man.

Scholarly, readable; well-documented, detailed, unique.

It is too bad that this book costs so much. It is *wonderful*! Gunnell presents various aspects of Bronze Age through Viking period (and later)dramatic performance in Scandinavia. From the rock carvings at Tanum, Bohuslan, Sweden (and elsewhere), as well as from archaeological artifacts and other information from primary and/or contemporary sources (such as the Codex Regius, Konungs skuggsja, Olaus Magnus), Gunnell weaves an intriguing and logical view of early dramatic events, including the "hieros gamos" (sacred wedding), animal guising, the Gothikon, masks/costume, and more. He also presents later-period seasonal drama, such as the Lussia, Halm-Staffan, the Icelandic "vikivaki", etc. Some of these latter "playlets" may also be found in Olrik & Ellekilde "Nordens Gudeverden" (a 2-volume, rare set in Norwegian. I (and other researchers) hope that this book will soon be re-issued in paper, within reach of poor post-docs who sweat the price of a tank of gas! If your library (or interlibrary loan) has it, borrow it (if you haven't the $126 or so to get your own copy). Gunnell covers things that I haven't seen elsewhere, with copious figures and clearly written (and documented) text. It is also written in English, for those Out There who don't read a Scandinavian language. I really wish I could afford my own copy!
