Not worth it.

To start, the book isn't as long as I thought it would be. The gestures that it covers are mainly obvious ones like how to say stop. In any country if you used the sign for stop someone would understand. I was hoping for more Italian specific gestures and not generic ones that may be used in Italy but are also used all over the world. I do like the fact the book explains everything in Italian as well as in English. Overall I was disappointed in the book. It had a lot more potential.

Grade 6–9—High school freshman Cooper Warner's stepfather makes his life miserable, and his English-teacher father only seems to care about how well he does on his Hamlet paper. But these problems pale in comparison with the biggest one of all: his mother is trying to kill him. At the beginning of the story, she pushes him into a slimy old well on the vineyard property owned by her new husband. As Cooper tries to escape, he begins to realize that a hideous creature is toying with him, hungry for his blood. Cooper makes it out of the well, but the creature is determined to hunt him down and force him to take its place, and it has enlisted the help of his stepfather and his seemingly possessed mother. Cooper tries to enlist his girlfriend's help, but when the creature abducts her, and then uses her and his brother as bait, Cooper realizes that he is intended to be a sacrifice for the continued fertility of the land and that he will have to confront the monster. The author claims to have been inspired by Hamlet, but the connection with Shakespeare's play is tenuous at best. The story has a few good touches, as when the creature possesses Cooper's MySpace page, but there are too many plot holes and too much is left unexplained. Shakespeare Connection?

A.J. Whitten is a pseudonym for mother and daughter writing team Shirley and Amanda Jump. Shirley is a prolific romance writer and her daughter is, well, a teenager. This does not bode well for a novel when you have a combo of a hack and an inexperienced girl narrating a story. The parts where Cooper has to deal with the creature in the well come off quite well, being equal parts creepiness and fear. I guess I would have to give Shirley credit for those parts. As for the lame cultural references and feeble attempts to be "teen-hip" with the dialogue, I would lay that solely at the feet of Amanda. Though the bookjacket references Hamlet quite heavily, the two authors are never really able to bring Shakespeare into the book with any significant rhyme or reason. Cooper happens to be reading Shakespeare and there just happens to be a novel happening so they should go together, right? right? Something else that grated on my nerves a bit was Cooper's inability to get anyone to help him. The only cop interested in the goings on is an alcoholic that can barely put one and one together, much less face a supernatural force. All in all, the book was a decent read, but the abilty of its writers ultimately doomed it to mediocrity.

Hard, hard, hard to get through...

I've had this sitting by my bedside table, on my kitchen table, and on my desk for about 6 months now. I've read it off and on, and finally plowed through it today to knock out this review. There've just always been...more interesting things to do. The Well is supposed to be a suspenseful book for middle- to high-schoolers, but instead of suspenseful, it is predictable and falls on the slasher flick side rather than the Shyamalan side of horror.

The youth interested in suspense and horror at this age are more likely to be reading Stephen King already, and some of the subject matter in this book does not make good reading for younger readers, see SPOILERS BELOW*******************

i.e. brains spilled on the ground, pus-filled skin, baby-eating monsters, murdering moms.....

At any rate, this might be a good library rental for those older readers who are intrigued by the concept, but check it out before buying.

O'Brien, formerly director of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at Boston's Children's Hospital, and Tippins, a writer in the child development field, have reprinted their first two volumes (Watch Me Grow: I'm One; Watch Me Grow, I'm Two) and added a section for the 38- to 48-month-old preschooler to complete this set. Parents who derived help and comfort from the first two books will certainly enjoy this compilation. The authors combine the latest research in child development with an array of engaging and sometimes humorous child-rearing anecdotes (some from OBrien's own experiences with her twins) to make sense of the seemingly incomprehensible actions of a toddler or preschooler. For example, when a three-year-old deliberately misbehaves by eating cookies right before dinner, this child may actually be seeking reassurance that parental love is constant. O'Brien advises that when a child tests in this manner, parents should try to put their frustration with the behavior aside and provide their son or daughter with the limits they are seeking without anger. As in the first two volumes, O'Brien and Tippins discuss physical, cognitive and emotional development, stressing that children mature at different rates and their progress should be looked at individually. Written in clear, nontechnical language, each section ("I'm One," "I'm Two," "I'm Three") is organized into chapters addressing the physical, cognitive, verbal, emotional, and social development of that particular age, as well as each age group's special needs for routine and limits. Love this book!!!

Wow, I have the complete opposite take than the other reviewer. I absolutely love this book-it is so in depth and really explains children at every single developmental/emotional stage ages 1-3. Most books have a paragraph or maybe a few pages for every "problem" or developmental stage-this book has whole, very descriptive chapters. I recommend this book to all the new parents I know. There is a lot of reading but I love to read and soak in knowledge so this book is perfect to me.

Instantly useful and well laid-out, helps parenting be fun!

After just a few pages of reading, I actively used some advice given and it made a real difference in relating to my 16 month old. Each section describes several aspects of a particular age group: Brain and cognitive development, physical and emotional challenges, and my favorite, the toddler's perspective. The "Toddler's Perspective" sections give a typical scenario seen through the eyes of a toddler with their limited language and logic. This was, for me, the most helpful and unique part of the book and it really did help me have more patience with my son. It also helped me use play-time to better advantage, matching his level of understanding and his needs. The author imparts scientific information in a highly readable way and I had a lot of fun reading Watch Me Grow and putting her advice to use.

A very helpful and easy to read book

This is a great book for parents or caretakers of a toddler. The book is clearly laid out into sections by age (1, 2, and 3), and within each age, there are sections for the different types of development (such as motor, language, emotional). There is a checklist at the end of each section that helps you identify the key skills your child may be working on at different breakouts of time. From an organizational standpoint, this book is excellent.

I found the anecdotes and toddler-POV tales very helpful in understanding what is going on in my daughter's world right now. Most of them brought a smile to my face, and occasionally a happy tear as well.

A must-have for all bobbin lacers

This is my personal lacemaking bible. Especially helpful for those who have little or no access to other lacemakers, it is chock-full of diagrams showing virtually every technique imaginable. There are no patterns in this book; it is purely technique. Still, without it I would have lost my mind on several occasions. If you are learning bobbin lace, this book is one of the best buys you could possibly make.

A definite must for bobbin lace makers

Bridget Cook's Practical Skills (the Cook Book among fans) is a definite must for lacemakers. This is not a pattern book, nor a beginner book. It is the ultimate companion for bobbin lace makers, providing answers to almost every technical problem that arises when making bobbin lace. More often than not Cook provides several solutions to a problem, so you can choose the solution that suits your lace best. This book has saved my lace (and my sanity) several times and I heartily recommend it.

Not for first-time lace makers

While this is a very good book, it can be intimidating to the beginning lace maker.

I received this book and several other books when I decided to teach myself bobbin lace. The sheer overwhelming amount of diagrams, information, and instructions was too much. I put this book aside and used the other, simpler, books to get started on the basics and to make my first projects. I now use Practical Skills as a reference manual for looking up specific stitches or alternate methods, but it should not be the first book a lace maker gets. It contains skill sets but not patterns, so be sure to learn the basics before looking for this book.

About the Author

Hemant Kumar Pathak is a professor and head of the School of Studies in Mathematics and the Director of the Center for Basic Sciences at Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University. Dr. Pathak is the author of nearly 50 textbooks for undergraduate and post-graduate students and the author or co-author of nearly 250 publications. Dr. Pathak is an editorial board member of the American Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics and the Journal of Calculus of Variations as well as a reviewer for the American Mathematical Society. His research interests include nonlinear analysis, general topology, Banach frames, and integration theory.

Ravi P. Agarwal is a professor and the chair of the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University–Kingsville. Dr. Agarwal is the author or co-author of more than 1,000 scientific papers. His research interests include nonlinear analysis, differential and difference equations, fixed point theory, and general inequalities.

Yeol Je Cho is a professor in the Department of Mathematics Education at Gyengsang National University and a fellow of The Korean Academy of Science and Technology. Dr. Cho is the author or co-author of nearly 400 publications. His research interests include nonlinear analysis with applications, inequality theory, and the geometry of Banach spaces.

Good concepts coverage - But no example proof

With 2 book on our Web services library shelves, this book adds in as the best for getting introduction to Web services security specifications and popular implementations. If you are little lazy to read the specs from web sites, this book is an ideal choice to get an introduction to them. But again, this book is a bundle of content reproducing the specs of XML Security efforts at W3C, OASIS, WS-Security (IBM & Microsoft), Sun's Liberty, Microsoft Passport. Interestingly this book also contains some obsolete versions of Security specs (So be careful, before you assume things).
If your are an Architect seeking a practical implementation solution or a case study to practice in your architecture, this book DOES NOT add value at ALL. As I said, this book lacks practical implementation scenarios especially examples using real world security implementations like Passport, SunONE, EnTrust, Netegrity TransactionMinder etc. So think about it.
If you are newbie wants to get ideas about Web services security then this BOOK IS THE BEST at this time ! But always lookout for latest book so that you don't get buried with obsolete specifications.

Covers all the bases

This very readable book covers the Web services security area well, devoting chapters to all the usual suspects (XML Encryption, XKMS, WS-Security, SAML, et al). The C# and Java code examples are neat, and I was pleased to see the new .NET Web Services Enhancements used in the code.
The standout chapters are on XKMS (I guess that must have been Phill Hallam-Baker's contribution), the WS-Security roadmap, and a chapter on the legal implications of Web services. It's not often you find a legal chapter in a technology book - I guess that is a sign of the times. One of the case studies in the appendix focusses on implementing the Vordel product, though the rest of the book is vendor-neutral.
A lot of this stuff is a moving target, so I'd like to have seen a website of updates provided. But the book itself is an excellent introduction to this over-hyped and sometimes confusing area - highly recommended.

Solid intro to Web Services and its security requirements

Before reading "Web Services Security" (WSS), my knowledge of Web Services relied on a few magazine articles and chapter 10 of "Hacking Exposed: Web Applications." After reading WSS, I have a better idea of how Web Services work and how a variety of acronyms (XACML, XKMS, SAML, etc.) provide security. This 312 page book isn't lengthy enough to make you a Web Services security expert, but it provides a good foundation for consultants and other professionals.

Good security books do more than teach ways to attack and defend various technologies. They assume the reader isn't an expert in the technology or concept, and provide background prior to explaining weapons and tactics to exploit vulnerabilities. WSS meets this challenge by educating readers on the purpose, history, and future of Web Services. The authors take nothing for granted, explaining why transport-level encryption via SSL is insufficient for Web Services. WSS emphasizes key security concepts like "persistence" and separating policy enforcement from decision-making. I also appreciated the authors' willingness to share key insights, like the argument that "like XKMS, XACML is more about applying XML to security, rather than about applying security to XML." (p. 120). This demonstrated knowledge of applying security to a wider range of subjects than just Web Services.

On the down side, I found the SAML section (ch. 6) confusing. The writing style implied another author contributed this material, and the chapter's "checklist" was a list of questions -- not the summaries found elsewhere. I didn't find the legal section (ch. 14) particularly clear, either, despite the hype it received on the back cover.

Overall, WSS is probably the best Web Services security guide currently available. It meets the market need for an introduction to the subject, and covers material neglected elsewhere, like the Liberty Alliance Project (ch. 11). Those with questions on Web Services security would do well to start looking for answers here!

Three Great Stories

I loved all three (complete) stories.
Each story had strong, well developed lead characters, as well as interesting and engaging supporting players.
Each story, though a romance in the same era, had a different plot, with some different twists.
Each story was well written in period with a little humor mixed with the drama.
Each story (thankfully) was clean and not filled with explicit sex or vulgar language. Thank you Ms. Hiatt.

Incredibly amusing

All three novels are funny and entertaining. The plots are pretty forthcoming and cliche, but Brenda Hiatt creates interesting characters that even if you have read the plot so many times before, can't help but love. If you like regency novels this collection is for you.

About the Author
Ole G. Mouritsen is a distinguished scientist and professor of biophysics at the University of Southern Denmark. His books include Sushi: Food for the Eye, the Body, and the Soul and Seaweeds: Edible, Available, and Sustainable.

Klavs Styrbæk is a chef who, for more than twenty years, has owned and run the highly regarded Restaurant Kvægtorvet (The Cattle Market) in Odense, Denmark. He is a passionate advocate for the renewal of classical Danish cuisine.

Mariela Johansen has Danish roots, lives in Canada, and holds an MA in humanities.

Jonas Drotner Mouritsen is a graphic designer and owns the design company Chromascope (www.chromascope.com). His movie projects have won several international awards.

I was of the old school that MSG was unsafe so was glad to read the modern clarification of this myth

I just received the book and have read the first section and find it most interesting. I was of the old school that MSG was unsafe so was glad to read the modern clarification of this myth. The recipes look like a fine addition to my collection and the photographs are excellent. I actually bought the book to give as Christmas gift to a gourmet friend and I think I made a good decision with it.

IT's like being at cooking school without enrolling

This product is going to take a while to read. You get a history lesson about Umami. and it's an advance course on the stuff. IT's like being at cooking school without enrolling. But I am learning about Umami, and might in the future learn how to power pack punch the flavors of dishes.

Delicousness and science

The book is an excellent review about the science behind deliciousness. While reading it you go through an adventure of old recipes, you feel the taste and you want to try everything.
