Helpful on my toefl test!

this was a good book to get strategies on how to answer during the exam. my score improved from 86 to 110. the reading practice tests were easier than the actual test though. listening, writing, and speaking practice tests were very helpful. i liked the cracking section since i learned techniques on how to answer fast, but surely. i only have 1.5 hour to read 4 passages with minimum of 5 paragraphs plus answer 56 questions on the reading. the techniques the book taught me helped me a lot on how to be able to maximize my time. i liked how you only read parts from the paragraphs then go to the questions immediately so you will not run out of time. also, the tips it gave to answer the summary question, which are worth 2 points, were also very helpful since i found that confusing. i liked the practice tests for the listening part since they are similar to the actual test. the audio CD that comes with it will be very helpful on this part (and also with the speaking section). in the writing, i only focused on the techniques they give on how you will develop the paragraphs. then most importantly the speaking section... i focused on this more since it was my lowest on my first attempt on toefl. the only thing is that you have to time yourself, which i did.

PS (i also used the barron's practice tests (the program, not the book) for the speaking, which i find more helpful since it tries to give you a feel of the actual test and it does the timing for you. i also recommend using the speaking and writing strategies by bruce stirling. the technique it gave helped me score 28/30 for both writing and speaking.)

Great for Strategies

This book is excellent for basic strategies for all standardized tests, and great iBT specific strategies. I used this book to teach a TOEFL preparation class. I used this book for the first portion on how to use strategies to conquor the exam, but I wish it had more examples. I had to use a separate book to provide my students with more examples.

Another thing that is not as great, is that the CDs, while nice, aren't timed, so you need a stopwatch to help you out to make sure you are preparing only in the time alloted. Overall, I really like the book and the method they used. You will need to have a relativley good level of English in order to succeed at this exam.

I was really disappointed to discover that the NEW book I just purchased had all the same texts as the book I purchased four years ago. No one should bother buying new books regardless of the advertising that says "new edition" since the publishers are just recycling the same old texts year after year.

Book 12
The Cards
Philip is tired and stressed out. His father is always nagging him about college, but Philip wants to make his own life. When he seeks answers from Tarot cards, his life starts spinning out of control. But that's exactly what the cards predicted, so it couldn't be their fault, right? Scott wants to help his friend, but before he can offer a warning, he needs to learn to love.

I really enjoyed these books. They dealt with the supernatural and occult in a Biblical manner, exposing the truth behind twelve different types of occult, one in each story. I highly recommend this series for all young readers, twelve and up.

One thing that bothered me plot-wise: it was a bit convenient that such trouble continued to come to this one family. Like Ralph Macchio in the Karate Kid running into convenient "Karate trouble" everywhere he went, Becka and Scott run into "occult trouble" at every turn of their lives. The series also didn't tie up the loose end of who Z was. It hinted at a resolution, but not in a satisfactory way for the end of a twelve-book series. So if you're looking for an answer to Z's identity, you won't find one.

Today I spend an hour hiding in conference room get a piece of coding done, did not reply emails until 3:00 pm, got out of the office at 5:15 pm, and I felt this is the most productive day for the last 5 months. Don't read the book first!

If you plan on both playing the game, and reading the book. I'd strongly recommend playing the game first, before reading the book.

The reason for this is that the character you play in the game, cannot possibly know the full extent of the people and events that happen in the book.

By the reading the book first, you will interact with characters in the game with an amount of prejudice and familiarity that you shouldn't have, because your character doesn't know these people and has no knowledge of their past, and part of the game is interacting with them and coming up with your own decisions on how to deal with them.

Great SF

I have read SF for many years but never anything like this. Wow!

First, I like the entire concept of Mass Effect Andromeda (no matter how frustrating some of the game mechanics are) that of exploration (without having a bloodbath every time Shepherd went somewhere) with a positive outlook. Of course in the MA universe, we know no matter the choice taken at the end of MA3, the Milky Way would have to have centuries to recover from the reapers.

I don't recall many stories of a centuries' long cryogenic series of arks except for a vague memory of an Andre Norton story way back in the 1960's.

Humanity and alien allies, probably privately funded (who are the benefactors?), over 100,000 of them, have to overcome the challenges of a new galaxy as well as find new ways to work together. Who knew that a SF story could so thoroughly explore the viewpoints and motivations of bureaucrats, security, engineers and technicians trying to survive the Scourge.

But ever more this book shows that government (of the Nexus) lacked the foresight to be flexible and inclusive.
So the Andromeda Initiative has to make hard choices. Are there any villains here? Who is "right" and who is really following the Mission? As a history professor I am delighted with this exploration of not just outer space but inner space.

I think this book is an excellent complement to the game and I look forward to the next book

Meanwhile, if I can just find my way out of the Kett fortress on Voeld...any suggestions would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, not a great tie-in novel

I'm a big fan of the Drew Karpyshyn Mass Effect (and Star Wars) novels, and I've played Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 multiple times each. I'm 75% through ME: Andromeda. I can say, having played Andromeda, that this book didn't have much to work with. Unfortunately, it didn't bring anything new to the table to compensate either. I wasn't expecting the tautly-written action set pieces that are a Karpyshyn specialty, but I left with a new appreciation of Karpyshyn's character work and world-building -- or perhaps the built world that he got to play in and populate. Sadly, Andromeda may be the most boring part of the universe.

Positives:
- Solid, readable prose
- Good characterization and internal states

Negatives:
- Barely anything happens
- No reason to care about what little does occur
- This is a smaller scale story that, unfortunately, didn't need to be told
