As a practicing Neurofeedback therapist I was intrigued by this book. It gives an interesting slant on a therapy which is currently primarily used for psychological ills such as ADD, Depression, PTSD and so on.

Hardt has some insights in to the spiritual aspects of brain-waves and he is certainly one of the pioneers in the study of how different brain waves are related to different "spiritual" states.

But other reviews which judge the book to be a barely disguised advert for his Biocybernaut Center, are pretty fair.

The book is biased towards a conculsion which suggests we do all need to spend $15,000 for the level one course at his clinic.

In reality, the Alpha and Alpha-Theta waves which are especially important to his work, are being worked with by neuro-feedback therapists like myself, all over the world. And for a tiny fraction of the cost. I charge $100 per hour and that is typical for a qualifed therapist working with a large amount of highly sophisticated neurofeedback equipment.

What is more, it is possible to learn to induce these brain waves oneself using certian techniques. But, neurofeedback is the optimal route and has scientifically proven record with many disorders, not least those needing more alpha - such as anxiety, post traumatic stress, subtypes of ADD and many more.

If you are intrigued by the ideas in this work then I would highly recommend the following as more honest, user-friendly and fact based introductions to the field of brain-wave altering procedures using the EEG as feedback:

1) Google "Neurofeedback and Alpha" - you'll find lots of interesting links

2) A great book about Alpha states and techniques to increase them is Les Fehmi's Open-Focus. Les Fehmi was the true research leader in this field.

3) A good introduction to brian wave work in general and the history of neurofeedback is A Symphony in The Brain by Tim Robbins

4) A classic on spiritual growth, consciousness and EEG brainwaves, are the books by Anna Wise. Anna is a pioneer in the field - amongst the very first in the field in the 60s and 70s to start researching what was really going on in the mind's of meditators.

5) Finally, you might even consider buying a decent neurofeedback machine yourself. They start at around $800 and four day intro courses to the subject are abundant and around a further $1000. For less than a seventh of the cost of Hardt's introduction week, you would have your own system. A life-time's exploration at your fingertips.

In short, I would probably recommend reading the above books rather than this Hardt book, and, above all, doing your research and not assuming that this rather vain work is the only way to reach EEG nirvana.

Have a wonderful journey. Brain-wave entrainment (in all its forms) and consciousness transformation is a very exciting and real field. Enjoy it. Claim it for yourself - but don't be fooled by this book that it costs $15,000 or anywhere near.

This book would be an excellent read for someone that is thinking of taking the Biocybernaut Training. It reads like a long advertisement for the training which costs a mere $15,000 per module! Good history of the training with a few interesting stories of people that took it but mostly razzle dazzle. It did make me wish I had a spare 15K laying around so I could be happier, more peaceful and on the road to Zen enlightenment.

save your money

Bill Harris is a master marketer who lured me into Dr. Hardt's Biocybernaut program with his glowing personal testimonial of its benefits. I learned only later he only "test drove" it for a day or so. Dr. Hardt's center was nothing I expected it to be for $15K, but rather had a "back room" warehouse feel with what appeared to be cobbled together monitoring equipment and training rooms. It reminded me of Dr. Frankenstein's laboratory. The training is grueling, numbing, and obviously brainscrambling and Dr. Hardt's follow up group sessions were, in my opinion of questionable effectiveness. Producing alpha is great in theory,but in and of itself is not the "holy grail" to happiness as suggested in the book and the program. While, I did experience some beneficial awareness and experience of both enhancing and suppressing alpha in the chamber sessions, the program is essentially group therapy with electrodes. A very expensive indulgence in my opinion, without any particular long term benefit.

Wonderful, Sweeping Love Story

Edouard and Helene are an unforgettable couple.
Edouard de Chavigny comes from a dynastic family of French jewelers. Helene Craig comes from the wrong side of the tracks in rural Alabama. They see each other on the streets of Paris and they have that prescient recognition, "love at first sight"-- and their story begins. Edouard and Helene, seemingly worlds apart, come together with a sense of inevitability.
This book is not a romance, though a love story is one of the novel's central features. The plot takes place in Europe and America with events transpiring from 1959 to 1975. The plot lags when Edouard and Helene are separated and there is a certain "ick" factor to the plot-- which is there for I don't know what reason. But the love story is like no other.
Ms. Beauman is often compared to Sidney Sheldon, with her glittering world of jetsetting characters, rightly so. But Destiny has a better love story than ones you find in Sheldon's novels.

Timeless love story!

My favorite book of all time for fiction! Although a very long novel, its twists and turns and masterful weaving of a story through many decades is simply the best love story I've ever read. If anyone thinks that "Titanic" is the love story of all love stories, they haven't even begun to know what is in store when they encounter Edouard and Helene's love for each other...........my only disappointment is that it had to end the way it did, but that's what makes the story so poignant. Set amid France, England, and America, it is full of surprises along the way and also the story of a two people who never forgot each other despite many setbacks and trials. If only I could know a man like Edouard.................

Still love this book after many years

Read this book over 25 years ago and loved it. I loaned it to a co-worker and never got it back. Now, many years later and hundreds of books later, I found it again on Amazon. I am reading it again for the first time since I was in my 20's. Now in my 40's, and stil LOVE this book!

If You Listen to Shortwave Radio / World Band Radio (or even considering it) YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!

I can't believe that this is the 25th edition of this wonderful reference book. I've been buying them ever since the first issue. And each one was worth the upgrade. After all, would you want to search for a TV program with last years TV Guide? Shortwave broadcast stations change their programming, their hours, the language used and even the area of the globe they broadcast to. Without this guide you are just shooting in the dark if you are trying to listen to a particular type of programming.

Each year there are reviews of radios, antennas and other listening equipment. Believe me they are not afraid to say what they think and why in their thoughtful and clear reviews. You will know why they liked or didn't like something after reading them. One reason I like to keep my older issues, is so that I can check out the reviews of equipment that I run across on eBay, hamfests, etc. If you are shopping for a world band radio you can save the price of this book on your next radio purchase (new or old).

There are insightful articles about countries around the globe and things you can learn by listening to their local radio stations. The 2009 edition has an approximately 15 page article titled "Columbia: Bandits, Ballads, and Broadcasts". Very interesting!

Then there are the "Getting Started" articles that educate and make a beginner comfortable. Those articles, plus the product reviews, take up almost 200 pages this year.

After that there is a section titled "What's On Tonight". This gives some recommendations about stations and programs to listen to each hour of the day. Detailed enough to take up about 50 pages in the book.

Then there are 60 pages of addresses and contact information of broadcast stations around the world.

The next section is "Worldwide Broadcasts in English". Most of us know that the USA, Canada, Great Britian, etc. broadcast in English. Would you like to listen to news and music from Mongolia? Or, considering the Middle Eastern situation, there are Syrian, Iranian, Saudi, etc. broadcasts in English. There are about 15 pages with schedules in this section.

The final narrative section is "Voices from Home". this is a 15 page section about broadcasts in a station's native language.

Then there is a 13 page glossary with photos of radio and shortwave listening terms and abbreviations.

Finally, there is the detailed schedule by frequency and then time of what you might expect to find on the radio. These schedules are done in a graphic format that is easy to understand. Let's just say that this un-numbered section is between 150 and 200 pages long.

So, for under $20, don't you think you are getting your money's worth?

Still A Good Guide for Listening Shortwave Stations

With the right radio and antenna, it's fun to listen to English speaking stations from around the world. When on our sailboat in the Caribbean , in the early morning hours, we could pick up broadcasts from places such as Turkey and New Zealand when conditions were right as Armed Forces Radio and Voice of America. While out of date, many of the station frequencies and times remain the same today. Now as a dirt dweller, I have a long wire antenna that doesn't offend the HOA, my SSB and this guide. Still fun to listen to the various stations from around the world.

Great book for beginner to pro SW radio enthusiast, MUST HAVE!

I have renewed my childhood hobby of radios. I messed around with it for many months and got some good advice from the web but there is nothing like a GOOD BOOK. It has equip review of radios (receive only), antennas with detailed explanation of the who, what and why. Also it explains the world of SW or HF (shortwave or High Freq) radio listening world wide. They not only have freq and schedules ** they feature some different stations. Really quite excellent.

** Schedule and Freq: If you want the latest than get the newest version of Passport. Freq's can change over time as stations move (some times). They do this for many reasons such as interference or changing atmospheric conditions. Never the less its an excellent way to get started in the world of radio.

I know SW RADIO is a little RETRO in the world of cell Phones, iPhones, iPods, Internet, WiFi Internet, satellite radio & TV and cable TV, but there is a lot of information out there on the radio. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE THRILL OF GETTING A SIGNAL CLEARLY 8,000 MILES AWAY. I enjoy making my own antenna and improving it. I also work with the fairly new DRM stations transmitting digital audio over the SW freqs. Last night I was listening to Radio Cuba (in English) and it's very interesting to hear them report US news. Can you say Propaganda.

There is so much to know its daunting, but this book is great in they way they explain with out talking down to you. Even Pros that have been at it for awhile will love it. They do detailed reviews of radios, two of which I have: TenTec RX320D and the Degen DE1103.
