Getting Unstuck

Staying stuck in anger can become such a habit, we don't realize how stuck we really are. But staying stuck in anger prevents us from living full and productive lives. F. Remy Diederich's second book is more than a self-help manual. Remy uses biblical principles (without getting "preachy") to help the reader recognize accumulated anger and start the process of healing and restoration. This book reads better than Remy's first book, "Healing the Hurts of Your Past" - in part because it is better organized, but also because Remy's writing style is clearer and more focused. The first half of the book helps the reader identify ways we get stuck in our anger, and the second half moves the reader through a series of steps to start getting un-stuck. Throughout the book, Remy offers journaling pauses to encourage the reader to write down responses to specific questions. Like any good program of self-awareness and transformation, you will get out of it what you put into it. Commit to the process, and join Remy on the journey toward health and wholeness.

THOUGHT PROVOKING.....

Stuck: How to Mend and Move on From Broken Relationships

First off I want to say this is a book I would highly recommend and already have recommended to friends of multiple religious and non-religious beliefs. It's "peppered" with scripture, not overwhelming.

I have to say the beginning information explaining how to read the book seemed a bit drawn out to me, but once I got through it and into the regular chapters it really started flowing and hitting home.

I was initially interested in reading this book because I had recently felt my life as "Stuck". Having multiple health issues, bad choices in the opposite sex, feeling a failure as a single parent and being told I have multiple heart conditions and not knowing how much time God will be giving me. I was stuck which way to turn, what to do, re-evaluating almost 50 years of not quite living up to others expectations and wondering had I really honored God in my life, had I really done the best I knew how at the time for my kids? So I was excited to see where this book would take me.

In chapter 3 where Remy explains about the Look of Anger "rage, violence, swearing,silence", yep been there done that. Then in chapter 4 explaining how to "Understand Anger". The "perceived injustice, Emotional Response, Actions Taken."
I know all parents out there will relate to this. I wish I had this wisdom when my children were small. But it also fits ALL adults, I won't give away more of the book, you must read it to gain value from it and don't worry Remy doesn't just explain the bad he also helps you learn and grow from it and become un-Stuck in your life.

I like the way it is written so that 10 people from various walks of life can read it and come out with 10 different ways on how its just perfect for them. I feel it is a book for anyone not just people in a certain walk of life. It is a easy read and re-read. You can skim through it and then be hooked and read through it slowly and really answer the provoking questions. It's just right for anyone wither you believe in God or not. I feel Remy wrote this for the masses no matter your beliefs or struggles.

This is a definite read for everyone. Give it a try.

Awesome book! A MUST READ !

When I became aware the STUCK was getting published and what exactly the topic to be covered; I knew that this would be my next book of Remy Diederich's that I would own. His words in the pages of Healing the Hurts of Your Past spoke to me as if they were intended for only me. STUCK has caught my attention from the beginning cover and kept me glued to the end.
Anger is one of the short-comings that I have struggled thru for many years. This resource has allowed me to realize that I may not be the only person on earth that struggles with those people who think differently than I do.
I have and will continue to encourage anyone who has struggles with relationship connections to read this book. Awesome read!

In recent decades, federal policymakers have increasingly shunned the outright disbursing of benefits to individuals and families and favored instead less visible and more indirect incentives and subsidies, from tax breaks to payments for services to private companies. These submerged policies, Mettler shows, obscure the role of government and exaggerate that of the market. As a result, citizens are unaware not only of the benefits they receive, but of the massive advantages given to powerful interests, such as insurance companies and the financial industry. Neither do they realize that the policies of the submerged state shower their largest benefits on the most affluent Americans, exacerbating inequality. Mettler analyzes three Obama reforms—student aid, tax relief, and health care—to reveal the submerged state and its consequences, demonstrating how structurally difficult it is to enact policy reforms and even to obtain public recognition for achieving them. She concludes with recommendations for reform to help make hidden policies more visible and governance more comprehensible to all Americans.

Freedom's Biggest Threat: Social Policy Submersion

I came across this wonderfully written book by Suzanne Mettler while browsing the internet for a list of all the major government social policies. Only days earlier, I had been down to the local board of elections to vote for the next President of the United States and other government officials. While standing in line, along with candidate information, I was handed a pamphlet about Frederick Douglas Republicans. I was not aware then, as I am now, that that little pamphlet would lead me to the work of Mettler. In the minds of many American citizens, Republicans represent the party of less government spending and involvement in the private lives of its citizens. While Democrats are generally thought of as the party favoring government involvement mainly through social welfare entitlement programs...more spending. However, Suzanne Mettler's book elucidates the fact that the U.S. government is also, primarily, the invisible supporter of social programs that are incentivized and delivered through private individuals and organizations. Uncle Sam majorally provides funding for thousands of activities that are actually social programs. To many citizens, these programs float beneath their perception regarding the involvement of government, because they are only made visible through banks, businesses, contractors and other entities that directly interface with the public. Because of this, Mettler states that it is beyond time for evidence-based policy making that restores the connection between government and its citizens. This connection she says, will give citizens the capacity to be more deeply involved in the political process and to have their voices actually heard. The Submerged State is so inspiring for its fluidity and ability to cut straight to the core of the problem in U.S. governance today. America's citizens do not fully understand how their freedoms are being represented in Washington and across the country. Permeated throughout the book is the emphasis on behavioral economics - evidence-based policymaking, and how public policy influences the health of democracy. Are we really free in America if the average person in this country does not really understand, for example, the depth of influence on social policy by "private actors" who stand to benefit the most? Most of us vote with a herd mindset without the foggiest idea of who is driving the bus...merely passengers. The book is a must-read. It will turn on the light that will enable most of us to begin to join the conversation that govern our lives and that of future generations.

A powerful look at the hidden side of government

It doesn't take a pundit to know that American politics are screwed up beyond measure. Congress is stuck in gridlock, the economy is stalled, elections are decided by culture war attack ads, and politics itself is derided as a pursuit for lying hustlers. Everybody has a a scapegoat, but Mettler actually has some evidence backing her theory.

The key issue is not the government we see, but the government we don't, the vast tangle of tax breaks, public-private partnerships, and incentives that Mettler deems 'the submerged state'. The size of the submerged state is astounding, 8% of the GDP, or half the the size of the visible state (Medicare, social security, Medicaid, the military, servicing the debt, and the relatively minuscule discretionary funding that covers everything else the government does, from transportation to education to NASA and foreign aid).

Mettler deploys economic and social statistics to show that for all it's expense, the submerged state is a failure on nearly every level. Whatever your politics, there is something to dislike about the submerged state. It represents a transfer of wealth from the poor to the wealthy, when most Americans abstractly support reducing inequality. It is a distortionary government influence on the workings of the free market, without even the relativity clarity of direct purchases or regulations. It often fails to accomplished stated policy goals of improving access to education, healthcare, or housing. It leads to civic disengagement, as those who benefit fail to see how the government has helped them, or how they can meaningfully impact politics through voting. And above all, it is corrupt, as it replaces broad public participation with the lobbying of narrowly constituted wealthy interests groups.

This book is not perfect. Mettler is a liberal political scientist, and she has the biases of her profession: that conservatives are responsible for much of what's gone wrong with America over the past 30 years (disclosure: I agree), and that citizens would vote 'better' (I.e. for liberals) is they were just better informed. She is also not quite up to the task of sinking the submerged state. But these are minor quibbles. In the social sciences, I evaluate theories on their explanatory power, and Mettler has provided a powerful lens for seeing many divergent policies as part of a unitary whole.

President Obama came into office with a social welfare policy agenda aimed at reconstituting a conglomeration ('submerged state') of existing federal policies that incentivize and subsidize activities engaged in by private actors and individuals. Efforts to restructure the political economy via taxation, higher education policy, and health care, he entered an area presenting immense obstacles to reform. For much of the public, delivery within those areas has failed to meet the high expectations surrounding him when he took office.

As of 2008, social (non-business) tax expenditures accounted for 7.4% of GDP, the largest emanating from the non-taxable nature of health insurance benefits provided by employers, followed by the home mortgage interest deduction, and then tax-free employer-provided retirement benefits. (Tax expenditures for business, such as those for the oil and gas industry, make up another 1%.) These should be added to the 17.1% of GDP spent on government welfare programs (1995). In addition, the Higher Education Act of 1965 gave incentives to banks to lend to students at low interest rates; this was followed by 'Sallie Mae' to provide a secondary market for such. Then we have the Earned Income Tax Credit

Obama's first problem came from intense polarization, combined with unequal representation in the Senate from conservative, relatively low-population states, and the ability to impede the majority through filibuster via only 41 votes - an obvious target for lobbyists (about $17 billion spent 1998-2009 by the top five sectors). Few organizations, however, represent the general public on social welfare issues, especially those within the submerged state.

While users of 'visible social programs' become more supportive of government, they do not do so after using submerged-state programs because many don't recognize the origin of their support. (President Obama has acerbated the problem by not highlighting the government's role in many hidden areas.) Anywhere from 25% (Food Stamps) to 60% (Home Mortgage Interest Deduction) recipients report they 'have not used a government social program.'

Those identifying themselves as 'conservatives' were much less likely to acknowledge using a government program. 'Keep your government hands off my Medicare' said one town hall meeting attendee in 2009; 25% of Medicare beneficiaries in 2009 believed their benefits came from a private insurance company. Almost half of Social Security recipients believed they had paid for the entirety of their benefits.

Another key factor: The bulk of deductions and exclusions for employer-sponsored health insurance, home mortgage interest deduction, and charitable contributions deductions go to those in upper-income sectors. (Turns out the tax break given employer-provided insurance dwarfs the cost of the entire Affordable Care Act, while subsidies to help those who can't afford health insurance have become extremely controversial.) Thus, Obama's efforts to reduce their regressivity met severe resistance - starting with the affected industries and also including major donors, while lacking support from many in lower-income segments who didn't realize they were/would be benefiting.

Bottom-Line: The submerged state obscures the role of government and exaggerates that of the market. Mettler ends cautioning us not to take at face value the claims that most Americans dislike government, then adds suggestions for future efforts in these submerged areas - eg. improved communications with the public.

Important read...

A very informative book that identifies specific issues and factors that have lead to the extreme polarization in political ideology in this country. In the end, the attempt to draw people further apart is only making our government incapable of getting anything done. It's an important read because it can help people better understand the importance of economic issues, race, and social issues such as abortion or gay marriage, in the context of political ideology.

Enchanting Christmas Story and Exceptional Illustrations

The Littlest Evergreen's talented author and illustrator Henry Cole, really knows how to captivate the hearts of his readers. This is an enchanting story, with an environmental message, about a how a tiny evergreen grows into a Christmas tree and about what happens to him after the holiday is over. Cole's illustrations are beyond exceptional - so much so that I found myself looking at them over and over again. He uses vivid acrylic paints in such a way that they have crisp edges to make featured objects contrast beautifully with the backgrounds. This artist has illustrated more than 50 children's books, including several he has written himself. Every child, who celebrates Christmas and loves to choose a fresh tree every year, will also adore this book. It is without-a-doubt one to keep and read every year before Christmas. It sure got me in the Christmas spirit!

A chainsaw is used to chop the tree down and then it is planted in the ground at the end of the story. Maybe some kids would go for that. The art is well done.

Before joining Fox News, Kelly served as a general assignment reporter for WJLA-TV (ABC 7) in Washington, D.C., where she covered national and local stories of interest. Prior to her career in television news, Kelly practiced law for nine years, seven years as a corporate litigator at Jones Day and was an associate for two years in the Chicago office of the law firm Bickel & Brewer LLP. She lives in New York with her husband and children.

As a fan I ended up questioning her intentions for writing this book.

I'm a fan of Megyn Kelly but I have to say that this book is not worth your time or money. I thought I would end up liking her more after reading this, but I ended up questioning whether her intentions for writing this were merely for personal gain. Some of her allegations were too far fetched and did not sound authentic, especially because she waited to reveal these situations until her book debut. If you watch the Kelly File, you know that Megyn isn't afraid to ask the tough questions and to challenge others, so I would expect her to blow the whistle on these incidents early on if they were true. Wish I could have rated this higher, but I really expected more.

Can't put it down

I'm almost finished with Megyn Kelly's book and I'm so glad I bought it. It's been awhile since I've wanted to be totally immersed in a particular book. Found myself wishing I could stay home from work, get under the covers and just read. I find Megyn to be an excellent role model, working hard, achieving excellence in several areas, and recreating herself when she realized that she was settling for less. Her high standards for herself both as a professional and as a Mom are evident in the book. I had tremendous respect for Kelly from her show and even more from reading the book. The only thing that gives me pause is that she didn't blow the whistle on Trump bribing journalists before the election. Maybe it would have looked like she was taking sides and I'm sure remaining fair and balanced in her coverage while Trump and his supporters were threatening her could not have been easy, and I must say I commend her for managing it amazingly well. I think the book is very well written and has had me laughing and crying on the train while reading.

Disturbing the comfortable and comforting the disturbed

50 years ago I read Victor Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning and still remember its profound impact on my understanding of myself and others. I won't live another 50 years but Van Hagen's book will definitely impact my remaining years.

While it validated some of my current thinking (e.g. that scripture is not nearly as historical as we were taught as children), it also challenged me to rethink my concept of faith and the positive role that doubt and conflict can play in one's journey of faith.

The book is clearly written and grounded in the author's own faith journey. It is well worth reading.

Both historically, and at face value,

I found this to be a fine book. The prose is spare, lean, direct--much like Jim, its protagonist. It does not have the eloquence or depth of Vidal's later work, but it doesn't TRY to--it stays within itself. The official amazon.com reviwer has said not to read it for the sex, and this is of course true. The only sex scene actually described is described metaphorically, but so beautifully as to inspire Thomas Mann to call it (in the word of one translator) "glorious." Vidal himself uses a more modest word in translating Mann's diary entry, though he's very proud that Mann credited this book with inspiring him to take up "Felix Krull" again.

The book is NOTHING like "Brokeback Miountain," either the movie or the short story. Although Jim resists for a time thinking of himself as gay, and spends the years between 17 and 22 on a quest for the lost love with whom he spent most of a weekend having sex near an abandoned slave cabin close to their homes in a small Virginia town, this quest is interrupted by fairly long-term relatioships with other men, whom he meets after 'going to sea," following in the foosteps of that lost love. The Hollywood actor and the sweet but not very successful writer, in Hollywood, New Orleans and further south--and then again in New York City, where he meets both again, provide an interesting and very realistic sounding mileau for a young gay man on the loose in 1946 and shortly thereafter. He never has sex with a woman, and quits trying after one attempt with a woman he's very fond of.

The end of his quest--and I read the revised, less "black" version--made me scream "Oh no!" But after thinking about it a while, I shouldn't have been surprised.

“But The Devil Had No Use For Him Either”

Composed when he was in his early 20s, Gore Vidal’s episodic ‘The City and the Pillar’ (1948) was one of the first American novels published that was overtly about homosexuality.

Concisely written in plain language, the book tells the uncomplicated story of young, athletic Jim Willard, who, after a weekend tryst with close high school friend Bob Ford, makes his way into the larger world in search of Bob, who has shipped out as merchant marine. Idealizing their forty-eight hour adventure, Jim assumes their blissful relationship will necessarily continue if only he can locate Bob again. Masculine and ‘all-American’ like Bob, Jim initially shuns most homosexual and bisexual men, and doesn’t believe himself to be either, as he thinks of Bob only as his physical and spiritual “twin.”

But Jim’s homosexual desire erupts in a variety of pleasant and unpleasant ways, leading him to southern California, where he becomes a sought-after tennis instructor. Taken up by the locals due to his dashing appearance, stolid Jim becomes the kept boy of a famous male Hollywood star, then the companion of a bitter, alcoholic New York City writer and later, enlists voluntarily for the war effort. All the while, Jim, who is of average intelligence and not terribly self-aware, continues seeking Bob, both in his heart and on the streets of America's cities.

Other than tackling the then-taboo subject itself, young Vidal wisely didn’t attempt a great deal with ‘The City and the Pillar.’ The Hollywood party scenes, and others in which focus on the homosexual underground, are slightly ugly and reveal the author's disdain for effeminate men or those who identified themselves strictly in terms of their homosexuality. But the opening scene, which finds Jim alone and drunk in a dive bar, shows how well Vidal could write even at twenty-one years. Like Carson McCuller's 'Reflections in a Golden Eye,' 'The City and the 'Pillar' is short, confident, and tightly executed.

The original and more powerful ending, in which Jim, drunk and crazed with frustration, strangles Bob to death when the two finally meet again and Bob rejects Jim’s advances, was completely rewritten for the 1965 edition, so that Jim rapes and then abandons Bob under the same circumstances.

Despite the downbeat ending, which would be typical of homosexually-themed novels for decades to come, 'The City and the Pillar' is not particularly depressing, since Jim is a fairly limited personality, not because Jim is a homosexual or Vidal tried and failed to make him a three-dimensional character, but because Vidal purposefully made Jim something of an empty vessel whose good fortune in life is largely the result of his youth, athletic talent and rugged looks. As the narrative makes its way evenly forward, nothing about it suggests that things are going to turn out particularly well for Jim and his quiet obsession, and the book is clearly not the kind of popular novel, written with commerce in mind, in which the hero or heroine faces adversity but inevitably succeeds in the end.

Vidal was involved an unconsummated romantic relationship with the forty-three year-old Anais Nin at the time of the novel’s writing, and an arid portrait of Nin appears in the reoccurring character of Maria, an America-hating European woman with whom Jim tries, and fails, to have sexual intercourse and a normative heterosexual relationship.

Like Jim, year after year, Maria is consciously concentrating all of her time and energy on an endless search for fulfillment in love. But where Jim has his inevitable reunion with Bob as a fixed goal, Maria drifts from lover to lover, as Nin did in actuality. Nin hated the Maria character and the novel itself, and later in life, Vidal would have very little good to say about her, which is perhaps foreshadowed by Jim referring to Maria as "a goddess with a skull mask" and "the Death Goddess."
