Signs of Life in the USA great book for college course

The book was used, but in great condition. No highlighting, so my wife was able to read the book and make her own notations without there already being scribble from someone else. We bought this for one of her college courses, and it is exactly what she needed. According to the wife, book is well written, and very interesting.

I am using this book in my composition 101 class, and it is very good at relating new concepts to us with the things we currently know. The only thing I don't like about it is that the author/s assume you have read or watched all the books or films and it can get frustrating for someone who hasn't seen a lot of them. Other than that, though, it's a great book!

A Really Well Written & Presented Book

If you are a Pontiac Guy and you're looking for a book to rebuild that vintage engine, this is the book for you. Clearly fills a big void out there. Well written, not overly technical, it's sort of the "Rebuilding a Pontiac Engine for Dummies." (This is a compliment).

There are a few great tips and some really great information and ideas but its really to short to really cover a true rebuild. There is however some really great information and some good ideas and tips for prepping and actually performing some of the procedures of a rebuild. There are also several http links for websites and info on the web.

Excellent Book on Pontiac Engines...

Rocky Rotella has firmly established himself as one of the upper echelon of Pontiac writers. His work as a contributor for High Performance Pontiac has consistently been of the highest caliber and so when it came for him to start writing books on the Pontiac V-8, we had high expectations. As we expected, he came through with a high-quality, very usable manual for the proper building procedures.

With a solid plan formulated, he then shows you the proper procedures for the teardown, inspecting and cataloging of used components, deciding what can be reused and what needs replacing. He also provides a thorough rundown on the factory-supplied parts as well as the current state of aftermarket parts for Pontiac V-8s. He also advises the reader in the areas where an aftermarket replace- ment is superior to a factory piece.

From there, he provides a step-by-step guide to the re- machining, pre-assembly and assembly, as well as the proper procedures for initial startup, break-in and tuning for maximum performance and efficiency.

As if that wasn't already a great book, Rocky finishes off the book with several high-performance engine builds. Here you will find everything from a mildly-upgraded 389 Tri- Power from Dave Bisschopp at SD Performance, a street/strip 421 Tri-Power from Butler Performance and for the truly sneaky, a Pure Stock-style Ram Air 400 and a F.A.S.T. (Factory Appearing Street Tire) 462 cubic-inch Ram Air II with 14.0:1 compression!

Rocky does a great job with the topic and if you are looking to restore the engine in your Pontiac, this is a great book.

If you loved Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," Denis Judd's prequel to it is a book you must not miss. Written over 30 years ago--long before the current vogue for rewritten classics, sequels and prequels, and mysteries featuring literary characters--this is the story of that one-legged sailorman, Long John Silver, the central figure of the seminal pirate novel of all time. Unexpectedly reunited with his old shipmate Jim Hawkins (who is now grown up, married, and a doctor in practice in Gloucestershire), and dying of consumption, Silver decides to set the record straight and tell the full tale of his life. His experiences are probably very typical of those of many pirates of his day--not necessarily innately criminal or vicious, but more or less falling into the life out of mischance, a lust for adventure, or the ease of running afoul of the harsh laws of the time. Born and raised in Bristol, he wearies of his father's shoemaking trade and, searching for a life that will satisfy his boyish hungers, first falls in with a smuggler, is captured and jailed, escapes, joins a slaver, takes part (not entirely willingly) in a mutiny against a brain-damaged captain, helps quash an uprising by the chattel in the hold, survives a hurricane, is betrayed as a mutineer and sold into slavery in the West Indies, rises to overseer, falls in love with his master's daughter, saves her from certain death or dishonor when a crew of pirates raids the plantation, and to preserve both their skins joins the marauders, alternately privateering and pirating as opportunity offers. Along the way he meets several other characters who will loom large in the events later recorded by the young Hawkins--Billy Bones, Black Dog, Gabriel Pew, Israel Hands, Tom Morgan, Job Anderson, Michael O'Brien, Dirk Campbell--and learns to employ a tongue as silver as his name, manipulating men into things they might not otherwise have elected to do. With this, plus a rudimentary education (his mother taught him to read in his childhood) and a tall and powerful frame, his success and influence, while not rapid in coming, are assured. Yet for all the unsavory trades he follows, Silver as portrayed here is not an evil man. He loves plunder and kills his share of men, but he has no brief for torture or the harming of women (he once sets a young Spanish widow and her father free), and is faithful to Annette, his mulatto wife, even when his voyagings keep them long apart.

Judd captures the feel of Stevenson's original, especially in Silver and Hawkins's reunion in the first chapter, and fills his story with the salty lingo of the sea. He has a sound grasp of what life was like in that era and lets us look into it as through a microscope. Though perhaps better suited to teens than to the younger boys who comprise the chief audience for "Treasure Island," this is a volume that all who enjoyed the latter should relish too.

Bliss is a beautiful look into the lives of neo hippies

One thing about this book, is that it captures the pure bliss that every person in every photo is clearly experiencing. These are faces of truly, TRULY happy people, radiating love. If one day everyone on the streets looked as utterly pleased and content as the people in these photographs, the viewer would stand perplexed at the wonder of it all. What is it about these people, this culture that gives people such a feeling of complete joy? They live in a world where everyone helps eachother survive, they make no negative impact on the environment or other living beings, eat vegan diets, meditate, do yoga, and listen to music and dance with their friends regularly. Such simple lives, yet they've discovered a world and a happiness that most westerners only dream of having, where buying the coolest material item and taking more antidepressants seems to be the answer to their unhappiness but they never quite get there. Bliss gives you a first hand look into the lives of simple, happy hippies living in peace with one another and emanating joy wherever they go and in every aspect of their life. I found myself wondering how they got there, and wishing I was a part of it.
Just look in to the faces of the people in the photographs. The look of pure joy and true happiness. How often do you see smiles like that in your everyday life?
