My Fair Ladies: Female Robots, Androids, and Other Artificial Eves, by Julie Wosk

The fantasy of a male creator constructing his perfect woman dates back to the Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. Yet as technology has advanced over the past century, the figure of the lifelike manmade woman has become nearly ubiquitous, popping up in everything from Bride of Frankenstein to Weird Science to The Stepford Wives. Now Julie Wosk takes us on a fascinating tour through this bevy of artificial women, revealing the array of cultural fantasies and fears they embody.  My Fair Ladies considers how female automatons have been represented as objects of desire in fiction and how “living dolls” have been manufactured as real-world fetish objects. But it also examines the many works in which the “perfect” woman turns out to be artificial—a robot or doll—and thus becomes a source of uncanny horror. Finally, Wosk introduces us to a variety of female artists, writers, and filmmakers—from Cindy Sherman to Shelley Jackson to Zoe Kazan—who have cleverly crafted their own images of simulated women.  Anything but dry, My Fair Ladies draws upon Wosk’s own experiences as a young female Playboy copywriter and as a child of the “feminine mystique” era to show how images of the artificial woman have loomed large over real women’s lives. Lavishly illustrated with film stills, artwork, and vintage advertisements, this book offers a fresh look at familiar myths about gender, technology, and artistic creation.

Review
"This is the 'cyborg manifesto' for technology, gender, and art in the twenty-first century. The search for the 'perfect woman' in film, art, photography, and technology collides with the reality of the complex and imperfect that is the essential human experience." (Arthur Kroker author of Exits to the Posthuman Future)

"Wosk's elucidation of the play of paradox in discussions of real and artificial women is at its best when it forces readers to reconsider their own assumptions about the value of authenticity and the function of artifice." (Women's Review of Books)

"The clarity and the engaging style of Wosk's descriptions—not to mention the images included in the book—make of My Fair Ladies a veritable trove of resources for teachers and students of gender, culture, and the media, particularly in introductory level courses. Besides making explicit the intimate connection between patriarchal ideals of femininity and Western ideas about technology, Wosk's carefully selected examples track how adaptations of the Pygmalion myth evolved alongside social and technological changes ... Wosk's singular perspective as an art historian, and importantly, as an artist, stands out for its freshness and originality." (Feminist Media Studies)

"Wosk presents a riveting portrait of simulated women, female robots, and robot technology in media and art from ancient generations to modern-day creations. The author provides insight about generational interpretation of the 'perfect woman' and the depiction of simulated women to reconcile societal fears of changing gender roles and emerging technologies." (Library Journal)

"Why are automatons so attractive? And just what is this 'perfect woman' anyway? Rounding up a veritable sorority of artificial Eves, Julie Wosk delves into the issues in her latest book My Fair Ladies, casting an analytical eye over female depictions, both physical and fictitious, to explore the history and the future of Woman 2.0."

Review
"Wide-ranging, lively, and thoroughly researched, Julie Wosk’s book expertly guides us through the cultural meanings of artificial females in myth, literature, movies, television, art, and photography, among other fields." (Susan Ostrov Weisser author of The Glass Slipper)"From Ovid's Metamorphoses to The Stepford Wives, from Enlightenment automata to 21st century robotics, Julie Wosk takes us on an amazing  tour of ideas about technology, about human perfection and about gender." (Ruth Schwartz Cowan author of More Work for Mother: The Ironies of Household Technology)

A lively and very smart book
By Susan Alexander
In My Fair Ladies, art-historian/painter/ professor Julie Wosk has given us a brilliant history of artificial (read "man-made") women, along with her insightful commentary into this fascinating phenomenon.

Beginning with a lively discussion of the Pygmalion myth first created in ancient Greece, a myth that has evolved over the centuries into many different versions, including the play by George Bernard Shaw and musical theater's My Fair Lady, Wosk's book moves swiftly through literature, movies, TV, art, robotics, and photography.

Richly illustrated with photographs, art, and scenes from movies and television, the book includes Wosk's clever commentary on the apparently unending male desire to create artificial--even robotic--women.

My Fair Ladies presents an extraordinary cavalcade of "artificial eves” in this lively and very smart book.

Review
If this was just a collection of his games, I would be high on the book. However, the authors took things to another level by offering 80 of his finest games, but also making each one a lesson. The notes are simple and clear, and the writers go out of their way to explain all the key positional features so you can follow what's going on and learn from it. Adding greatly to the instructional value are test diagrams. (Jeremy Silman, US Chess online, author of How to Reassess Your Chess)

Ulf was our cult figure, we'd give anything to become like him. (Alex Yermolinksy, former U.S. Champion)

The choice of the games is just as good as the penetrating analysis and the didactic presentation. The authors unlock the essential characteristics of each position by showing the ideas behind the moves. (KARL Magazine)

One wonders if many players, especially time-limited amateurs, might not do better to adopt Andersson's approach emphasizing overall understanding in place of memorizing lots of sharp opening theory. Strongly recommended. (John Donaldson, International master, International Master)

A good mixture of prose and variations. The book is both an anthology of best games and a teaching text on positional chess. It can be enjoyed on many levels. (Joe Petrolito Australasian Chess Magazine)

The annotations are ideally suited for the average player - clear verbal explanations, supplemented by sufficient, but still relatively few, variations. (Diplo: Towards more inclusive and effective diplomacy)

Positional precepts are often a mystery to many a player, but Kaufeld and Kern's explanations are so percipient that average players will come to a deeper understanding of the concepts of positional play. There are few books that speak to its audience in such an accessible manner. (Brian Almeida ChessCafe.com)

Reading Grandmaster Chess Strategy is an invigorating experience which will stimulate your positional vision and make you appreciate the subtle features of chess. (Arne Moll ChessVibes)

This book opens your eyes! (Grandmaster Peter Leko)

From Andersson, better than from anyone else, one learns pure chess, without being distracted by tactical coincidences. (Harald Keilhack Schach Magazine)

A great book! Andersson was my idol, too. (Simen Agdestein, Grandmaster, six-time Norwegian Chamion and former trainer of Magnus Carlsen)

Excellent. (Sean Marsh CHESS Magazine)

A book for collectors, for connoisseurs, and for chess players who want to improve. (Richard Vedder, FIDE Master, Netherlands Schakers.info)

Endgame masterpieces from a Swedish Zen master
By phaedrus
Had always wondered why there is no book on Ulf Andersson's games.
The only available source for Andersson's games before this book is
Aagard's "Excelling at Chess" and Pritchett and Kopec's "Best Games
of the Young Grandmasters". The wait is over! The current book offers
a deep look into Andersson's subtle positional (and very technical)
chess with incredibly many useful endgame ideas.

Agreed with Yermolinsky's comments that Andersson is a cult figure.
Polugaevsky even said (comments at the end of the book) that no one
[in the Soviet Union] plays like him. His endgame technique has been
compared to Capablanca, Rubinstein, Smyslov and Karpov.

It is unfortunate that Andersson is too modest to author his own game
collections. But the authors had done a nice job of letting the games speak
for themselves. They are organized according to thematic concepts.
The games in the book are not unlike Tal's games which tactically contain
mind-boggling ideas; Andersson's games also contain some mind-boggling
positional ideas (some are counter-intuitive and as daring as sacrificial
attacks: simply check the chapter on positional Queen sacrifices).

This is an excellent book for anyone who appreciates subtle technical chess
and beautiful endgames. This book is as enjoyable as Shereshevsky's classic.
Another fine offering from New In Chess.

Good book of strategic chess
By Martin
I played through all the games of this book (80 of them) and really liked it. Andersson's style seems deceptively simple. In many endgame positions which to me seemed drawn or difficult to win because of my lack of technical skills, Andersson wins in logical fashion and makes it look easy. The analysis was well aimed at a player of my strength, 1700-1800, and it did not bury me.
The book has 15 chapters based on theme, for example: playing against two weaknesses, an advantage in space, control of the d-file, fighting against the hedgehog, the art of defense, the Catalan endgame, rook endings, and various others.
Andersson's openings as White are mostly 1 Nf3 2 c4 3 g3 with an English Opening resulting. This move order also works against the Tarrasch Defense, Queens's Indian and King's Indian. He plays the Catalan if Black plays ...Nf6, ...e6, ...d5. He usually answers 1 Nf3 d5 with 2 d4. He is willing to go into the Sicilian Maroczy bind after playing Nf3 and c4 by playing e4 and d4 if Black heads that way.
I actually finished this book, which does not happen with most of my chess books, and I think the design of the book and the approach of the authors is part of the reason. It was more enjoyable than I expected.

The games of Ulf Anderson are the highlight ... the rest is very uneven
By Igelfeld
This book has gotten very good reviews both here on Amazon and other sources such as New In Chess (publisher of the book) and my input takes a slightly different perspective.

The book itself is based on the games from Grandmaster Ulf Anderson. Anderson in his prime was a top 5 player in the world and has played the world elite from the past 30+ years. The games of Anderson are well worth studying and the authors certainly picked a ripe and fresh topic using Anderson's games. The book steps through a series of strategic themes that are fairly typical of books on strategies. No real shockers in the list but I will shortly make some mention of additions specific to Anderson. The book starts with an intro from Peter Leko, the Hungarian world title contender. It's very prophetic when he says in the intro that he played a number of moves and really didn't see how he ultimately lost against Anderson. Other players back this observation up with a notable quote from IM Mark Dvoretsky saying something similar. This in fact is part of the problem with the book.

Why is that a problem??

Well, in games where there are a number of strategical subtleties, it really takes an advanced player to understand them. I actually think that a club player studying Anderson's game can learn a tremendous amount about strategic play wrapping up most of Nimzowitch's lessons from My System. Unfortunately, the authors are very clumsy in the way that they handle the games and the annotations. They definitely provided an interesting mechanism by pausing in the games to ask about the next move, but often there are a number of points in the game where subtleties occur with absolutely no mention. Very oddly, the authors will go into very long variations and points in the game where there is no mention at all what the strategic or tactical plan is for that 15 to 20 move sequence (ending either with an unexplained positional assessment or a reference to a single played game for that variation). Well, long sequences with assessments is an indication that a computer was used for analysis and then likely checked by the author. This really is not very valuable for me personally because I could simply take a game of Ulf Anderson from a game database and used the computer to look at possible moves.

Other structural problems included the preable to each chapter with a summary of the games and critical moves. For me, this is just annoying because I'd much rather have the authors give this preamble prior to the actual game with some better outline of the overall game plan for each side (or something). In fact, many to most of the games, the authors really didn't point out where the game was really slipping into a lost position. I know that some might argue with this point, but because so many moves were not really looked at critically, you could see trends well before the authors put in annotations that said something like "all other alternatives are also bad". The annotations did improve as the book progressed but I highly doubt that the club player really can try and play like Ulf Anderson unless they spend a tremendous number hours on technique. And this is really the point. Ulf Anderson had superb technique. He generally simplified positions through trades and took advantage of a subtle positional advantage. Often this advantage was perhaps in a slightly better than equal position. It should be noted that many of the games are not with heavy hitting GMs, so you may suffer from not recognizing quite a few of his opponents. In some games, the opponents made highly dubious moves and that is when the author's paused with their highlighted box asking "what do you think Ulf did and why?". The problem is that the club player to get to those positions is likely to make a considerably larger number of mistakes and therefore may find a single move in a position that he can't navigate into against an opponent of decent strength. The book could have easily been a selection of game positions with critical choices followed by a detailed explanation of the factors going into the "turning point".

With all that said, the true audience for this book is really a very narrow set of players that can fill in a lot of their analyses and details. Even Luke McShane in his New In Chess review of the book waved off the analyses and annotations of the authors and cited a position "buried" in unannotated game moves. Any player with attention for detail will in fact do the same thing challenging many unnannotated moves. The book does provide one the games to do such a thing, but so would a database. I don't want to be overly hard on the authors, they took on one of the most daunting tasks, using Ulf Anderson's games as the vehicle for their teaching. The book could easily have been called "How Ulf Anderson Squeezed Out Wins with Small Positional Advantages". However, there isn't a consistency through the games or themes to really say that they did better than a 3 star job in doing that.

Because the book is primarily about technique, the authors included some chapters on the endgame including one on the Catalan endgame. Endgames often are where positional themes start to fall apart with (in my opinion and as offered in the book Endgame Strategy by Shereshevsky)is about taking advantage of multiple weaknesses. Anderson really understood how to do this extremely well and furthermore, had a great nack for creating additional weaknesses.

So, in summary ... I'm very happy that I went through the games of Ulf Anderson, definitely feel that I've learned a great deal from the book, but I am disappointed in the overall annotations and positional assessment explanations in the book. This is partly because authors that try and stay "theme-oriented" often muddle the works because most games have multiple themes. There are very few games where one of the players does not have the advantage of giving his opponent two weaknesses. How many games aren't critically affected by the decision of the knight/bishop exchange? The list goes on and so the better books don't actually try and classify these things but instead help the student RECOGNIZE positions with potential for transformation. This is a tough skill to learn and even tougher to teach, but Ulf Anderson is perhaps the best that chess has ever offered in this area (other players include Fischer, Capablanca both who could squeeze out the advantage in any position).

I conditionally recommend this book to those students who really can critically examine EVERY move of Anderson's games and extract as much value as possible from the author's comments. But using Anderson as a model for play could result in a great many losses or draws because so much skill is required to take advantage of subtle positional advantages.

As I say in many of reviews of chess books, the price for the chess lessons in this book are extremely inexpensive and it really is time that is the deciding point on whether you'll really get something out of this book.

PS If you are a Reti player or English opening or hedgehog, they make up the majority of games in this book. I would caution you that the annotations on these openings are poor relatively to the work of Shipov (Hedgehog, five star book) or even McDonald's book on the Reti (3 star but still much better). Of course Marin's three volume set leaves all annotations on the English looking sub-standard including this book.

Iconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently, by Gregory Berns Ph.D.

No organization can survive without iconoclasts -- innovators who single-handedly upturn conventional wisdom and manage to achieve what so many others deem impossible.

Though indispensable, true iconoclasts are few and far between. In Iconoclast, neuroscientist Gregory Berns explains why. He explores the constraints the human brain places on innovative thinking, including fear of failure, the urge to conform, and the tendency to interpret sensory information in familiar ways.

Through vivid accounts of successful innovators ranging from glass artist Dale Chihuly to physicist Richard Feynman to country/rock trio the Dixie Chicks, Berns reveals the inner workings of the iconoclast's mind with remarkable clarity. Each engaging chapter goes on to describe practical actions we can each take to understand and unleash our own potential to think differently -- such as seeking out new environments, novel experiences, and first-time acquaintances.

Packed with engaging stories, science-based insights, potent practices, and examples from a startling array of disciplines, this engaging book will help you understand how iconoclasts think and equip you to begin thinking more like an iconoclast yourself.

From Publishers Weekly
Psychiatry professor Berns (Satisfaction: The Science of Finding True Fulfillment) describes an iconoclast as "a person who does something that others say can't be done." Though keeping his promise to reveal the "biological basis" for the ability to think outside the box, Berns keeps technical explanation to a minimum, instead using themes like perception, fear and networking to profile a number of famous free-thinkers. While the ordinary person perceives the world based on his past experience and "what other people say," the iconoclast is both willing and able to risk seeing things differently; in the case of glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, his creative breakthrough (departing from symmetry in his ice-sculptures) came after a car crash blinded him in one eye, literally changing his view of the world. The will to take risks is also paramount; Cardinals baseball coach Branch Rickey and his controversial hire Jackie Robinson, the first black man in the Majors, provide models of imagination and fearlessness. Berns also looks at iconoclasts like Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King Jr., Henry Ford, the Dixie Chicks, Warren Buffett and Picasso, relating in lucid terms the mindsets that set them apart.

If you’re an aspiring iconoclast and/or interested in what makes one tick, I think you’ll enjoy the book.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:7ade1cb63612ff4455107ec9d07b962f]] “It is, of course, not easy to be an iconoclast. The iconoclast risks social and professional ostracism, frequently alienates colleagues, and must face a daily reckoning with a high likelihood of failure. He walks a tough road. And although there is a certain romantic notion to the image of the rugged individualist, who, against all odds, triumphs over conformity, the simple fact is that most people don’t want to be an iconoclast. This book won’t make you an iconoclast, but you can learn to think a bit more iconoclastically by understanding how the three key brain circuits work. ...

The overarching theme of this book is that iconoclasts are able to do things others say can’t be done, because iconoclasts perceive things differently than other people. This difference in perception plays out in the initial stages of an idea. It plays out in how they manage their fears, and it manifests in how they pitch their ideas to the masses of noniconoclasts. It is an exceedingly rare individual who possesses all three of these traits. In the following chapters, the stories of iconoclasts provide lessons in how their brains, to varying degrees, implement the three key functions. Each story was chosen to exemplify one of these functions. Roll them all together, and you would have the ultimate iconoclast’s brain.”

~ Gregory Berns Ph.D. from Iconoclast

Wonder what the iconoclast’s brain looks like?

Well, that’s what this book is all about.

Our guide is Gregory Berns, one of the world’s leading pioneers (iconoclasts?) in the field of neuroeconomics. Berns is a professor in the department of Psychiatry and Economics and at the Goizeta Business School at Emory University.

This book is a fascinating look at the three primary facets of the iconoclast’s brain (perception + courage + social skills), brought to life via research studies and biographical sketches of modern iconoclasts.

Here are some of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. Iconoclast Brain - Is different.
2. Step #1 - See the world differently.
3. Your Amygdala - Keep it in check.
4. Stressed? - Swap short-term for chronic.
5. Be a Good Human - = Social intelligence.

Here’s to optimizing our perception, courage and social skills as we use our greatest gifts in greatest service to the world Iconoclast-style!!!

WARNING: This Book Will Change Your Brain!!!
By William Dahl
Required reading for the intellectually adventurous. Warning: This book will change you! Here are a few excerpts I adored:

"The definition of an iconoclast as a person who does something that others say can't be done. This definition implies that iconoclasts are different from other people. Indeed, this is true, but more precisely, the, iconoclast's brain is different." P. 6

Berns must have spoken to my wife before he wrote the following:

"the brain runs on about 40 watts of power ( a light bulb!)." p. 7.

"perception is a process that is learned through experience, which is both a curse and an opportunity for change. P. 8

"To see things differently than other people, the most effective solution is to bombard the brain with things it has never encountered before. Novelty releases the perceptual process from the shackles of past experience and forces the brain to make new judgments." P.8.

After having overcome the sheer terror of Berns speaking to my wife before he wrote the above, I am comforted by what he shares thereafter, including these tidbits:

The problem with novelty, however, is that, for most people, novelty triggers the fear system of the brain. P.8.

Fear is the second major impediment to thinking like an iconoclast and stops the average person dead in his tracks. P. 8.

I thought these two (Berns and my wife) got together to conspire to destroy me. Listen to the following from Berns:the word iconoclast, which means literally "destroyer of icons," p. 10.

My wife says she is just trying to move me out of the ruts and routines I seem to fall into. Along with Berns, I guess they have a point, based upon the following:

"The brain must be provided with something that it has never before processed to force it out of predictable perceptions."p.25

"we can say one thing about the iconoclast's brain, it would be this: it sees differently than other people's brains." P.32

Iconoclasm begins with perception. More specifically, it begins with visual perception, and so the first step to thinking like an iconoclast is to see like one. p. 32

"But epiphanies rarely occur in familiar surroundings. The key to seeing like an iconoclast is to look at things that you have never seen before. It seems almost obvious that breakthroughs in perception do not come I from simply staring at an object and thinking harder about it. Break- throughs come from a perceptual system that is confronted with something that it doesn't know how to interpret. Unfamiliarity forces the rain to discard its usual categories of perception and create new one." P. 33

"Imagination comes from the visual system. Iconoclasm goes hand in hand with imagination. Before one can muster the strength to tear down conventional thinking, one must first imagine the possibility that conventional thinking is wrong. But even this is not enough. The iconoclast goes further and imagines alternative possibilities. P.37

"but creativity seems to become more difficult for many people as they get older." P. 37

"we cannot see that which we don't know to look for. Second, the ability to see these subtle differences depends on experience. And this means that perception can be changed through experience." P. 42

"In order to think creatively, and imagine possibilities that only iconoclasts do, one must break out of the cycle of experience-dependent categorization-or what Mark Twain called "education." For most people, this does not come naturally. Often the harder one tries to think differently, the more rigid the categories become. There is a better way, a path that jolts the brain out of preconceived notions of what it is seeing: bombard the brain with new experiences. Only then will it be forced out of efficiency mode and reconfigure its neural networks." P. 54

"It typically takes a novel stimulus - either a new piece of information or getting out of the environment in which an individual has become comfortable-to jolt attentional systems awake and reconfigure both perception and imagination. The more radical and novel the change, the greater the likelihood of new insights being generated. To think like an iconoclast, you need novel experiences." P. 57-58.

OK...OK...I need to change --- I get that. My wife is HUGE on getting me involved in new experiences (painting the house, taking the garbage out, changing up what I read, and inviting me to new and fascinating social engagements(???). CLEARLY, she has conspired with Berns about this as well. Listen to what he writes:

"Categories are death to imagination. So the solution is to seek out environments in which you have no experience." P. 58

"The critical fears that inhibit people from sharing their ideas: the fear of being rejected. At its core, this fear has its origin in social pressure, which is one of the most common of human phobias." Pp.77-78

Individuals who tended toward social reticence felt comfortable pitching half -baked ideas." P. 78.

The soft-minded man always fears change. He feels security in the status quo, and he has an almost morbid fear of the new. For him, the greatest pain is the pain of a new idea. - Martin Luther King Jr. p.83.

"We know what we see, and we know right from wrong, but with enough social pressure, we cave in to the fear of standing alone. --- If we grant that we are all a bit reticent at times to stand up for our personal opinions, this leaves the door open to act as individuals when we choose. It is a noble grasp for free will. But-and this is the kicker-we must be brave enough. This was Asch's point. Even in a neutral laboratory setting, most people are not that brave." P. 92

"Groups are, indeed, superior to individuals, but only when they are diverse and individuals act as individuals. Statistically, most people in a group will lie along a spectrum of opinions, but because of the social pressure to belong, these opinions contract to the social norm. The availability of a minority position breaks the stranglehold of conformity, and groups that allow for minority opinions are statistically more likely to make better decisions than groups that require unanimity." P.103.

It an institutional level, the implications are clear: committees should not be required to arrive at a unanimous decision. Dissension must be encouraged." Pp.104-104

"The most effective way for a group to make a decision is by aggregating the opinions of independent individuals. Lt also follows that a group with a lot of diversity among its members is more likely to arrive at a good decision than a group that is composed of members who are alike." P.104.

"The human brain comes to like that with which it is familiar. And it is this sort of familiarity that the successful iconoclast must strive for. Rightly or wrongly, people put their money into things that they are familiar with." P. 141.

Yes, I have been referred to as "soft-minded and lazy" by family members. They have been attempting to rewire me since birth. Oncegain, Berns and my wife have been conspiring here. Listen to Berns:

"The brain is lazy. It changes only when it has to. And the conditions that consistently force the brain to rewire itself are when it confronts something novel. Novelty equals learning, and learning means physical rewiring of the brain." P. 199.

Berns is a boundary buster...he is on the frontier of breakthroughs in how we think and ways in which we might become more (much more) than we believe we are capable of becoming.

Lesson in neuroscience and history, not in thinking differently
By Elyse Watkins
Overview

This book is great at describing the neural basis of what makes an iconoclast, someone who does something that apparently can't be done, and why the general population will likely never be iconoclasts. It gives relevant examples of iconoclasts across a variety of disciplines, and how they have differed from the majority. It does not, however, give the majority insight into how to become iconoclasts. This could be because Berns argues that, in general, an iconoclast is either born an iconoclast or made an iconoclast because of a life-changing event. Whatever the reason, I would have liked to see a greater emphasis on how the average person can work to overcome the three barriers to iconoclasm (the only real solution he gives is in the final chapter "The Iconoclast's Pharmacopoeia"). In general, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the brain, interesting research studies, and some of the most influential people in history. If you are looking for a prescription on how to be innovative and think like an iconoclast, look elsewhere.

"The average iconoclast possesses a perceptual system that can see things differently than other people. He conquers his fear of the unknown, and possesses enough social intelligence to sell his idea to other people."

Perception

According to Berns, an iconoclast differs from the average person not by how he sees, but by how he perceives. When we see something, our brains give us the most likely explanation of what is occurring. It is difficult to innovate in a familiar surrounding, because the brain tries to take shortcuts in order to save energy, and in doing so leads to "perception based on past experiences." Berns suggests that because of the brain's tendency to assume what will be next, this stifles creative thinking. He suggests that in order to think like an iconoclast, we have to constantly "confront the perceptual system with people, places, and things it hasn't seen before." We need new environments and experiences in order to have imagination.

This section was probably the best at presenting ways in which we can overcome the first "barrier" to iconoclasm. However, aside from his suggesting that we put ourselves in environments that our brain has not yet experienced, Berns does not go much further. I appreciated his explanation of the neuroscience behind why our brains have evolved to virtually inhibit innovation. His examples of Walt Disney and the artist Chihuly were interesting in that these iconoclasts were made, not born, through distinct experiences that changed their perception of the world. Additionally, I appreciated Berns's use of optical illusions to demonstrate that the brain sees what it wants to see.

Fear

Berns argues that fear, and its corresponding stress response, is "the second great hurdle to becoming an iconoclast." When the body is presented with a stressor, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in. This is characterized by heightened blood pressure, dilated pupils, fast heart rate, and slowed digestion, to name a few. In prehistoric times, this fear response was activated to be able to prepare the body for "fight or flight", such as when confronted with a predator on the African savannah. Berns cites many studies in psychology that prove that when someone faces the challenge of conforming or not conforming to a group decision, the amygdala, a small structure in the brain known to be involved in the "flight or flight" response, is activated. Furthermore, when an individual participates in a task wherein he or she can fail, this same region is activated. What is different in iconoclasts, says Berns, is that they are not afraid of nonconformity or failure, which allows them to take risks.

This section was the best at explaining the biology behind the fear response, but the worst at describing how we can overcome that response. This section was particularly interesting because it is very relevant to daily life. Everyone has experienced the fear of nonconformance, such as when going against a common decision made by colleagues, the fear of failure, fear of public speaking, fear of taking risks - the list goes on. This section gives a biological reason to why these fears are so common, and how they inhibit us from innovation. Berns does not, unfortunately, provide any advice as to how we can overcome these fears. This section uses fewer examples of iconoclasts throughout history who have overcome fear, possibly because it is hard to quantify. It does, however, give many examples of research studies that support his argument.

Social Intelligence

Social intelligence is based on many factors, but the two most important are familiarity and reputation. "Iconoclasts, by definition, are foreign to most people," which is why this section seem almost contradictory. Berns makes the distinction, however, that social intelligence is not necessary to make an iconoclast, but it is necessary to make a successful one. When iconoclasts come up with ideas, many of them are foreign and completely go against what is accepted and familiar. When something is unfamiliar, it activates the amygdala, which from the previous section we know is responsible for the fear response. Thus, in order for the general public to accept the innovation (or the iconoclast him/herself), it must appear to be familiar. This is where social intelligence comes into play. "The ultimate goal, through familiarity and reputation, is for the world to shrink his world like Picasso. Don' be a Van Gogh."

This was, in my opinion, the most interesting section. It was replete with examples throughout history of iconoclasts who have both succeeded and failed due to their social intelligence. It is useless to have a great idea if the idea is not marketable and accepted by the general population. Although again, Berns does not suggest how to increase social intelligence, he does show pretty decisively the correlation between social intelligence and success. Presumably, the readers of this book are looking to think differently to create something new and exciting, and using the examples of iconoclasts who have done so in the past, and have succeeded, could be useful.

Style

In general, Berns usually starts his chapters with examples, followed by explanations of the neuroscience, studies that provide support for these explanations, and how iconoclasts differ from this. Although at some points Berns writes with technical language, I do not by any means think that should deter someone without knowledge of neuroscience from reading this book. He explains very well the different structures and functions of the brain and makes it simple for the average reader to understand. Berns keeps the reader interested by using relevant examples. The structure of the book, with its three distinct sections, makes it clear to follow his thought process. Admittedly, the last chapter, "The Iconoclast's Pharmacopoeia" seems a bit out of place with the rest of the book; however, it was still quite interesting.

Recommendation

I would recommend this book as a good and interesting read. As stated previously, I believe its value is in the examples it provides of iconoclasts throughout history and its brief explanations about the brain. I do not think this is a valuable tool for learning how to think differently.

Can you say unethical?
By McAllister Park
I thought I might get some good information with reading the sample but a good portion of the "book" is how to resell other Fiverr's Amazon reviews and fake ~likes~ on Facebook, etc. Realize that fake "likes" on Facebook can get a business or individual banned from Facebook. This is a marketing NoNo!!!! Honestly, when I see fake book reviews on Amazon, I get so disgusted. Reviews are for people that actually READ the book. Something that cannot be done in 10 minutes. Only tidbit of info is encouraging the reader to try and find passive income. Poof.. that is was it. A teaser to get you to buy the next article. So I just saved you $2.99.

"How to be a virtual sleaze"
By Reid Derr
What a sleazy strategy. Ironic that a book that advocates buying fake reviews has so many good reviews. Wonder where those came from? I'm sure they're all honest, unsolicited opinions offered by legitimate purchasers. Skip this book if you have a shred of moral decency. I hope the author enjoys his 4-hour work weeks while they last. This jig will be up shortly.

not what I expected
By Nicholas
The book focuses more on you being a middleman by selling fiverr services to people outside of fiverr. Not recommended if your looking for advice on using fiverr to sell your own skills .

About the Author
Frank H. Netter was born in New York City in 1906. He studied art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design before entering medical school at New York University, where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1931. During his student years, Dr. Netter’s notebook sketches attracted the attention of the medical faculty and other physicians, allowing him to augment his income by illustrating articles and textbooks. He continued illustrating as a sideline after establishing a surgical practice in 1933, but he ultimately opted to give up his practice in favor of a full-time commitment to art. After service in the United States Army during World War II, Dr. Netter began his long collaboration with the CIBA Pharmaceutical Company (now Novartis Pharmaceuticals). This 45-year partnership resulted in the production of the extraordinary collection of medical art so familiar to physicians and other medical professionals worldwide.
Icon Learning Systems acquired the Netter Collection in July 2000 and continued to update Dr. Netter’s original paintings and to add newly commissioned paintings by artists trained in the style of Dr. Netter. In 2005, Elsevier Inc. purchased the Netter Collection and all publications from Icon Learning Systems. There are now over 50 publications featuring the art of Dr. Netter available through Elsevier Inc.
Dr. Netter’s works are among the finest examples of the use of illustration in the teaching of medical concepts. The 13-book Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations, which includes the greater part of the more than 20,000 paintings created by Dr. Netter, became and remains one of the most famous medical works ever published. The Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy, first published in 1989, presents the anatomic paintings from the Netter Collection. Now translated into 16 languages, it is the anatomy atlas of choice among medical and health professions students the world over.
The Netter illustrations are appreciated not only for their aesthetic qualities, but, more importantly, for their intellectual content. As Dr. Netter wrote in 1949 “clarification of a subject is the aim and goal of illustration. No matter how beautifully painted, how delicately and subtly rendered a subject may be, it is of little value as a medical illustration if it does not serve to make clear some medical point.” Dr. Netter’s planning, conception, point of view, and approach are what inform his paintings and what make them so intellectually valuable.
Frank H. Netter, MD, physician and artist, died in 1991.

Tao Te Ching is the 2,500 years old source to Taoism, written by the legendary Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu. In 81 short chapters, he presented the world according to Tao, the Way, and how mankind should adapt to it. The book has become one of the foremost world classics of wisdom - maybe even more relevant today than it was to Lao Tzu's contemporaries.

Excellent translation
By Magnus Almgren
(Kindle version) Lao-Tsu has been a regular companion of mine for 40 + years.
It's always interesting to find new translations, although this far for me nothing has beaten the Swedish translation by Henriksson&Hwang ( only in Swedish, though).
I think I've read most of the English translations, my favourite is the Lau translation published by Penguin.
This translation by Stenudd is very much in quality and sharpness in par with my Swedish favourite.

I rate this translation as absolutely brilliant, and definitely a must if you are a fan.

The book is both chapters and commentaries.
Commentaries can be very useful for someone who is not so familiar with the text, or wants a reflection on the chapters.
For me as a frequent reader, I prefer to skip them(I know best anyway, don't I...;-)?)
The text in this translation is so pregnant and sharp, that I just don't want to read about it, the joy of the text stands for itself.
