Good principles in this book that will help with relationships, work issues, general daily interactions

Highly recommend reading this book to have a more insightful, confident approach to dealing with conflict. The author notes that conflict isn't wrong, or abnormal. It simply exists at times. Understood in the right way, conflict can be a good opportunity to achieve what neither side may have considered. Rather than posing obstacles and relationship strains, conflict should be consciously managed so it brings parties into common ground. Negotiation value.

A must have for any person wanting to go into business, management and even the medical field. Teaches you about the difference between an argument and actual conflict. Without going into to too much detail: conflict is more than argument a vs argument b. It's a way of creating innovation, reinforcing personal/professional relationships, and we go through it every day

Purchase takes me back to my childhood

I first encountered Asterix in Spain. I was 10, we had just left Cuba and a whole new world had opened up to me, including comics. This became the golden standard by which I measured all other comic purchases. It featured characters I had never encountered before. They traveled to exotic places; and the stories were intelligently written and very funny. I kept buying the books until we moved to the US and I ceased to find them in store shelves. Eventually Amazon came along and the world opened up to me once again. The gentlemen who succeeded Goscinny and Uderzo have extremely huge shoes to fill, but if this volume is an indication they are off to a great start. I hear from multilingual fans of the comics that there is a particular language they always enjoy reading Asterix in. Some do it in German, others in Italian. Even though I read French, for me Spanish is the language to follow these stories in. It's the one that brought me there originally and I'll stick with it, with all due respect.

About the Author
The Editor: Knut Lundby is Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo, Norway. He holds a Dr.philos. in sociology from the University of Oslo. He was the founding director of the interdisciplinary research centre InterMedia at the University of Oslo, focusing on design, communication, and learning in digital environments. He is the director of the Mediatized Stories project which this book draws upon.

Best Scholarly Book on Digital Storytelling to Date

If you are an educator or multimedia developer with an interest in digital storytelling, this may not be the book for you. It won't give you much guidance on how to lead others in telling personal stories through screen media. If, however, you are a scholar interested in theory and research on the reciprocal relationship between communications media and the authoring and interpretation of narratives, or the function of digital storytelling for the storytellers, this is the best book available on the topic.

The book is an edited anthology of 16 chapters held together fairly well by a focus on digital storytelling and "mediatization", theorizing the relationship between media and social practice. The authors begin with Digital Storytelling as developed by Lambert and the Center for Digital Storytelling at Berkeley, but expanded to include large-scale undertakings like the BBC's Telling Lives and Capture Wales projects, and Australia's efforts to bring digital storytelling into schools. Attention is also paid to the general and unorganized distribution of narratives through Web 2.0. There are some familiar US contributors (Glynda Hull, James Wertsch), but most of the authors are from Scandinavia, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and they bring perspectives of media theorists together with cultural psychologists. Together, they invigorate thinking about the implications of digital narratives by ordinary people.

About the Author

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

 

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

 

Callie Daniels has always had a passion for learning mathematics and brings that passion into the classroom with her students. She attended the University of the Ozarks on an athletic scholarship, playing both basketball and tennis. While there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education as well as the NAIA Academic All-American Award. She has two master’s degrees: one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Missouri-Rolla, the second in Adult Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis. Her hobbies include watching her sons play sports, riding horses, fishing, shooting photographs, and playing guitar. Her professional interests include improving success in the community college mathematics sequence, using technology to enhance students’ understanding of mathematics, and creating materials that support classroom teaching and student understanding.

Trigonometry is fun

I first learned trigonometry 26 years ago, and am currently a tutor in a Tutoring Center where math and English are the primary calls for our assistance. We started using this book on Trigonometry by Lial, Hornsby and Schneider last year, and it has been a real aid to all of us.

The chapters are designed with brief overviews, 'Chapter Openers', at the beginning of each. There are sample exercises in the explanations, as well as exercises in the problem sets keyed to specific application of examples. There are summary exercises that give review of mixed concepts, pull-quote boxes (here called 'Function Boxes') to highlight the reference aspect of the text, and useful chapter reviews to the same.

One thing that stands out about this text from the one I used so many years ago is the colour aspect. There are pictures, multi-coloured graphs and illustrations, and a general feel to the book that makes it visually worthwhile to look at. This book also takes advantage of the increasing sophistication of calculators - again, back when I took trigonometry, there were tables of data in the back for looking things up, since calculators (such as they were) had only add/subtract/multiply/divide functions.

The chapters go in a fairly standard pattern for trigonometry. Chaptes progress from basic Trigonometric Functions, defining triangular and angular ideas. This continues more in depth with Acute Angles and Right Angles, then proceeds to Circular Functions, introducing Radian Measures in for good measure. The fourth chapter introduces graphing ideas for the circular functions (sine, cosine, etc.), while the sixth chapter introduces the idea of the inverse circular and trigonometric functions. Other chapters include trigonometric identities (this always seemed to me to be like geometry or logic using trig functions), vectors, complex numbers, polar equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. Many of these concepts have direct application in engineering and other sciences.

This book is also geared for students who will be advancing on to calculus, and gives marginal notes on how trigonometry is used in calculus (so as to pre-empt the question, 'when am I ever going to use this?').

Actually, I found trigonometry to be among the more enjoyable math courses I ever took; together with geometry, it confirmed an early love of the discovery of patterns and symmetry in the very fabric of existence. This book reminds me of those early days of exploring ideas, and it is a pleasure to share these same ideas with new students via this text.

Awesome deal

Why I purchased: My book was stolen from me at school and I needed a quick replacement. This was an acceptable substitute for the book we were using in class, so I was seeking to find the least expensive version just to replace my old book for the rest of the year. Not even paying $5, this book would be an excellent substitute for the one that I had been stolen from me. I barely lost any time with prime shipping and the quality is very good.

What I love: It was marked as "very good" and it definitely is! There is nothing that impairs the book's details, and for such a low price, I'm actually shocked that it is in such nice condition! The eighth edition has everything that I need and isn't too different from my old book. I really can't believe I got it for less than $5.

What I don't love: I have zero complaints related to this product, as it came when it was supposed to, does its job perfectly, and was so inexpensive.

Conclusion: I recommend purchasing from this seller! Everything was described accurately and was at such a decent price. Thanks for the book!

A very bad book if you want to learn.

The book was in awesome conditions, but I'm giving it two stars because the book really sucks. It explains everything in a really vague way. If you wanna learn ,you will have to go to Khan academy and watch some videos. It sometimes explains a whole section in one page and gives you like four pages of exercises which you will not be able to solve with a one page explanation.

About the Author
Chris Langley graduated from Kean College of New Jersey in 1996 with a Bachelor�s Degree in Industrial Engineering Technology. He completed his Master�s studies in 2003 at Stevens Institute. He has over 30 years of experience in all facets of industrial utilities including 18 years of hands-on experience with ammonia systems. Mr. Langley has also taught HVAC, stationary engineering and refrigeration engineering in two of New Jersey�s vocational-technical schools for 18 years as of this writing. He holds a New Jersey double gold engineer�s license.

Andrew Sacks has more than 20 years of experience in the boiler, power plant, and refrigeration industry. This includes training and instruction of boiler and power plant personnel. Additionally, he has over 10 years experience as an instructor of Stationary Engineering. Mr. Sacks holds a New Jersey Gold Seal Stationary Engineer's License.

This is a 100% spoiler for the ending (and a spoiler alert for the reason it doesn't have 5 stars) and this is your official warning...

In the second to last chapter the author made it sound like Rain had died. Totally screwed with my emotions because I HATE when books end like that. I almost didn't read the last chapter I was so upset and if I hadn't I would have put this author on my "no read" list. Which is upsetting in itself because I really did like the book. I understand why the author would portray the situation as that way in lieu of setup, but it still really messed with me and I don't think I recommend this book to any "happy end-ers" (like me) without a warning first...

A Wonderful Love Story

I just finished "Following Rain," It is a wonderful love story that has some surprising twists in the second half. The author writes with an easy style but one that keeps you going. The characters were both believable and likable. The point of view switched frequently but not so often that it was hard to follow. As I was reading, I was wishing that it wasn't a fictional story! The Thinner Aquinas

This book is "The Thinner Aquinas," a targeted text specifically focusing on Aquinas's political and ethical writings.
Incluced are obvious selections from Summa Contra Gentiles and Summa Theologica (Five Ways of God's Existence and Essay on Law), but also included are excerpts from "De Regimine Principum."
There are hidden treasures in the back, excerpts from backgound sources and essays that influenced and were influenced by Thomisitic thought.
This book is geared towards a poltical scientist and poltical philosopher. For the theologian or the philosopher, however, I would reccomed Penguin Classics "Selected Writings."

A truly excellent anthology of Thomistic thought

This is a truly excellent selection of Thomistic writing, both by the Angelic Doctor and his critics and modern-day followers. It is not only comprehensive on the subject of Aquinas's politics and ethics but it is a good introduction to Thomism and natural law theory in general. Mortimer Adler's spanking of Bill Moyers on the subject of objective ethics is worth the price of the book just by itself.

About the Author
Mary Ann Hogan, MSN, RN has been a nurse educator for 25 years, currently as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught in diploma, associate degree, and baccalaureate nursing programs.A former item writer for the CAT NCLEX-RN(R) exam, Ms. Hogan has been teaching review courses throughout New England for the last 15 years. She also has contributed to a number of publications in the areas of adult health, pharmacology, and fundamentals of nursing. She is a member of the American Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society for Nursing.

Waste of Money.

I bought this book in order to prepare for my upcoming tests. I was excited about the additional questions and audio notes attached to it; however, I find my self completely dissatisfied. After struggling to create a profile on their website, I found out that the bonus questions were on a website that didn't exist. When I went to their support page, the server was unavailable. Then, I checked the Vango notes to see if I could listen to it and found out its not an option on the site. COMPLETELY MISLEADING. If I knew I was just buying a bunch of notes I would not have spent all that money. Unfortunately, its too late to return.

Loved it I would buy it again !!!!!

Love this book I was struggling with Health Assessment and after I bought this book my grade went up to an A. This does not mean it would work for everyone the same way, remember everyone study different. The information from this book was the same my teacher was giving in class that's why it helped. I also recommended to nurses that need a refresher in Health Assessment, it contains all the material you would need to remember.

Look elsewhere, not so great

The book itself is alright, not the best book for nursing health & physical assessment out there. The material is ok, but I feel like layout of the book is not appealing. My main issue is with questions from the "bonus website". First of all, they're counting the pre-test & post-test questions that are already in the physical book, so it's very misleading because we're not actually getting an additional 750 questions. Additionally, the extra practice questions for each chapter, a lot of them are very repetitive. They are worded differently, but provide the same answer choices and the answer is the same as well.

I was expecting a lot more since this book got so many good reviews. Very disappointed. Would not recommend.
