About the Author
Judith M. Lieu is Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge. She has written numerous books, including I, II, and III John: A Commentary (2008), Christian Identity in the Jewish and Graeco-Roman World (2004), and Neither Jew nor Greek: Constructing Early Christianity (2002).

An impressive albeit cautious tome on the great 'heretic'

After reading Lieu's book I came away knowing a lot more about the primary sources and scholarly discussions about that Arch-Heretic Marcion, about the man himself however, I now know much less. Lieu is highly skeptical of reconstructions of Marcion's scriptures, and she does a fabulous job cutting through the exaggerations of the early church fathers, especially of that master rhetorician Tertullian, but when she's finished, there's not much left we can confidently say about the man and the specifics of his teaching. The only issue I had with her book, and why 4 stars instead of 5, is she doesn't adequately address the growing number of scholars (Tyson, Pervo, MacDonald, Acts Seminar, etc.) and their arguments which places Luke-Acts in the second century around the time of Marcion.
