MLA Handbook for Writers

I purchased the large print edition of this manual and I am glad I did. It is so easy on the eyes. With plans to attend grad school, I decided to invest in this writing manual. I already have the APA guide, but I wanted this one to help my understanding of grammar,syntax, and other editing tips. I have found the manual to be very good and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book as a gift for high school graduates with plans to attend college.

Used as 8th graduation gift

I gave the 7th Edition of the MLA Handbook to my graduating 8th graders. (O.K. Not so great to a cool 8th grader, but on some dreary, blurry-eyed night, they will say, "Thank you!".
I had demonstrated the use of the MLA Handbook and provided students with the opportunity to practice using it. Using such research handbooks is not an intuitive task for young researchers. I created a game in which a student would ask how to reference an unusual source and another student would use the MLA Handbook to teach the class how to provide both in-text and works-cited references. Since most high schools require MLA, my students learn to use the MLA Handbook rather than 'wing' referencing. Students found the MLA Handbook a very useful tool when forced to write without internet access, and a wonderful grammatical `reminder' as well. '
For advanced students, I would prefer to use the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 7th Edition and selected books/works than textbooks!

Fair Reference

The book is ok, but it's poor when it comes to web references. It covers web citations, but shows no examples of web quotes. This is a prolific problem everywhere. Try looking up web quote examples, and you only get citation examples. Very frustrating and I feel that my money wasn't wisely spent when I got this book as I was trying to avoid having this problem in the first place.

About the Author

Dr. Gerard J. Puccio is Professor and Chair of the International Center for Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State, a unique academic department founded in 1967 that offers a Master of Science degree in creativity and a Graduate Certificate in Creativity and Change Leadership. Dr. Puccio has published more than 40 scholarly works and delivered more than 40 presentations at conferences and research meetings. As an internationally recognized creativity researcher, Dr. Puccio has presented his work in such countries as England, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, France, Singapore, India and Hong Kong. Recently Dr. Puccio was one of the featured speakers in a panel discussion on creativity and intelligence at an international conference sponsored by the French Federation of Psychology to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of Binet’s work. In recognition of his scholarly efforts, Dr. Puccio received the State University of New York’s award for exemplary contributions to research.

In addition to his scholarly work, Dr. Puccio has delivered workshops and consulting services to numerous organizations including: Procter & Gamble, Kraft, Nabisco, 3M, IBM, Fisher-Price Toys, Rich Products, and many others. He has delivered creativity training programs and courses in a number of countries, including: Spain, Ireland, Brazil, England, and Tanzania.

Dr. Puccio received his doctoral degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Manchester, England.

Marie Mance is Director of Leadership Development at Buffalo State College and an adjunct faculty member at the International Center for Studies in Creativity, teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs. She holds an M.S. in Creativity and M.Ed. in Counseling/Student Personnel. She has traveled internationally to present creativity and creative problem solving courses and workshops in Nigeria, Singapore and South Africa. She has also designed and delivered workshops in creativity, strategic planning and other change initiatives for a number of organizations in the public and private sector. Currently she is developing and presenting leadership programs for faculty, staff and students at Buffalo State with creativity as a core component. Marie also coaches in the leadership program and has completed training at the Coaches Training Institute. She is pursuing certification to become a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach. She is President of the Niagara Frontier chapter of ASTD (American Society for Training and Development) and a Colleague of the Creative Education Foundation.

�Mary C. Murdock was an Associate Professor and graduate faculty member at the International Center for Studies in Creativity, Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY, where she taught graduate courses and supervised master’s work. Through her career, Dr. Murdock was involved in international work, including work as a guest lecturer on qualitative research in the Cognitive Psychology Unit of the University of Bergen and in teaching Creative Problem Solving courses at international schools in five countries (Colombia, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, China, Malaysia).

Her publications included two texts: Creative Problem Solving and Role Playing, co-authored with E. Paul Torrance and Creativity Assessment: Readings and Resources with Gerard Puccio. She was also a co-editor along with Center colleagues, of Understanding and Recognizing Creativity: The Emergence of a Discipline and Nurturing and Developing Creativity: The Emergence of a Discipline.

Mary held a BA in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an M.Ed. in Gifted Education and a doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Georgia.

Books Shows How Creativity Powers Change

The authors put up a strong case of the leadership-creativity connection. Using research by other scholars, the authors highlight problem solving as an important skill set of a leader. The book takes the reader through the creative problem solving process that Buffalo is renowned for and the techniques to facilitate divergent and convergent thinking.

The book is easy to read with practical examples to aid learning. The coverage is comprehensive including sections on creative styles and climate. There is theorectical basis which helps the reader to understand and build confidence.

This book guides me on how to get out of the rut and inspires me that things can be different. A great resource book.

Current Thinking About Thinking

As a student of creative process, I've made it a point to read nearly every book that comes out on the subject. Creative Leadership: Skills That Drive Change is a seminal book on the topic, a must read if you want to be aware of the latest thinking about creative thinking.

Gerard Puccio, Mary Mance, and the late Mary Murdock, have written a book that forwards the field, and adds new thinking to how people think. Importantly, this is not just a book about creative thinking, but a book about how that topic connects with the all important skills of leadership and change. This is a scholarly book, and yet, it is highly readable, with good examples and case studies. I've read this book several times because there is no better guide, no better text, for understanding how structured creative thinking can help solve complex challenges.

For those who care, this book modifies, extends, and adapts the 55 year old Osborn-Parnes model of creative problem solving. The new model improves on the old one by recognizing that it is not always necessary to walk through every step in a structured model. It adds a diagnostic step that is missing in the original Osborn-Parnes, and it includes in the idea development phase, the idea refinement step. These subtle shifts from the original process are helpful in adapting the process to real world challenges. Creative Problem Solving Handbook

Originally, I had no idea what the Creative Problem Solving process was, but after reading this book as required reading for my Creativity and Innovation class at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, I knew it had the power to change. The Creative Problem solving process set forth in this book is very straightforward, relatively easy, and gives you instructions on how to solve some of the biggest challenges out there.

Businesses run into problems all the time, and sometimes not knowing how to solve them can be a real challenge. This is where CPS comes into play, and it can thus help organizations grow using both divergent and convergent thinking. In a way, the Creative Problem Solving process mimics Design Thinking, and it forces you to reexamine the problem, while being open to some pretty wild ideas.

The book is definitely beneficial to those people who use it in conjunction with a project based learning approach. It's also very beneficial to have more than one person participate in the process, so as to get an influx of ideas and not being limited to your own imagination. Having people of diverse backgrounds can definitely help, and being deferring judgement of those ideas is also crucial to the process. I liken it to the kid who gets up in front of the classroom and has everyone laugh at him. Will he share his ideas? Probably not! By deferring judgment, the possibilities of a solution are more readily available, since you piece together a potential solution from bits and pieces of the other ideas.

Since being exposed to CPS, I can definitely say it's a game changer. It taught me to "get out of the building" and do some ethnographic research. Watch what people are doing, and examine the problem at hand. You'd be surprised by what you learn. Also, since the process does require a facilitator for brainstorming sessions, consider hiring a Creative Problem Solving consultant to help guide the process. By being knowledgeable you gain insight, but having someone guide the way creates a vision for the future, and I'm sure that's going to be full of winning strategies.

BAD EXPERIENCE!! :(

So unhappy with these people.. The originally send me the WRONG item, tried calling and emailing them and didn't hear back until like a week later or so. (via email) After receiving the wrong item, I immediately send it back and asked to get my return shipping refunded for $4.90.. /sigh I've still not received it yet. When they finally did contact me, they of course apologized for the mix-up and told me to keep the wrong item that was sent to me. This is after I had already sent it back mind you. I told them I no longer had it and wasnt looking into getting anything for free. ALL I wanted was my correct item and to be refunded for the return shipping.

Toughest Book I Ever Loved

It took me several years before I was ready to work this book. I would pick it up, get paralyzed with fear, and then put it down. Once I was ready, it changed my life completely. I buy a new one every year or so, and work it for different reasons. Totally changed my world. I am forever grateful to the author.

This is a great tool if you want to get free !

This workbook, to be used in conjunction with "Facing Codependency" is a fantastic tool in breaking the heavy denial that comes with codependency, taking a clear objective look at where the codependent beliefs came from (without blaming others), seeing the true impact of this disease on our lives and based on that information helps us to decide for ourselves clearly what steps to take to work towards true freedom and recovery. I appreciate that both these books encourage self-responsibility and does not just present the (yes, depressing at times) negative aspects of this devastating disease but the HOPE of what "freedom" looks like and very specifically as we work through the book what health and freedom will look like for us! Happy recovery!

This book is single highhandedly the best introductory resource to Korean that I've seen so far... and I have tons of books. This book has explanations that took me ages to search for on the web. This is something that I wish I had when I first started learning Korean. It is really well laid out and keeps me motivated because there is a structure to everything. If you don't have Korean classes in your area this is a really great alternative. I've heard great things about Japanese From Zero and was so excited when George announced he was working on Korean from Zero. There are plenty of places to practice your handwriting in the Hangul section as well as the rest of the book. One problem with most of the books that I own is that it is laid out just like a novel with no opportunity to practice. This book allows me to constantly feel engaged. The best part is that after the Hangul section, romanization is completely absent! Including romanization in a language learning book is the absolute WORST thing authors can do. Stop it! If you seriously want to learn a language then you need to learn the alphabet. Romanization is used as a crutch and will ultimately slow you down. If you're serious about learning Korean this is definitely the book for you - for that reason alone.

GET THIS BOOK!

So, you've decided to learn Korean. Congratulations! That's great! I did too. And when I did, I saw a TON of material out there, but most of it was disorganized and confusing. All the "serious" language books were a little daunting as well because of all the technical linguistic jargon used. Seriously, none of us really use words like dipthongs and gerrunds. (Well, at least not the low-brow people I interact with on a daily basis.) So if you are unclear what a present perfect participle is...this is the book for you!

It combines the "serious" concepts like verb conjugation (yeah, some of the jargon is unavoidable) with a no-nonsense approach to teaching you usage. It's meaningless to memorize a bunch of words. With this book, you begin to understand and recognize patterns in speech. Then, the authors skillfully teach you to exploit these patterns to expand your knowledge and your "speaking sense" by merely adding vocabulary since you already know and understand the underlying patterns!

What I also found helpful are all the little tips and tricks that are tucked throughout the book. Little things like why you might hear a "ch" sound in a sentence when there is no "ㅊ" character in the sentence. I also liked the interactive nature of this book. It is meant to be written in! It is like a combination textbook and workbook. (I do recommend that you use pencil in case you screw something up. That way, you can correct it, and when you review it later, you can review the correct examples.) You can also download the audio files from their website. This greatly expands your retention of the material since you are engaged in three different ways. (Seeing, hearing, writing.)

Perhaps it's not the be-all-end-all of Korean language books, but what it offers is a good solid foundation for your future studies. Even intermediate learners will pick up some useful tips, tricks, and explanations from this book. In short, it's brilliant and I highly recommend this book!

When my children were in preschool, I found it hard to find good quality books in English and Spanish. This difficulty inspired me to create the English and Spanish Foundations Series. This series started out with only a few books, and has now grown to include over 50 products.

Over the course of my career, I have developed over 600 books and other products for some of the largest publishers in the United States and have received numerous awards and accolades. Poor product description---No book, just CD.

I was expecting a book and CD..this is only a CD, you need to buy the book separately. And when I went to buy the book, it's ~$24...so it total that'd be $35 for one book with CD for a kid...RIDICULOUS!! At least my kids can listen to the spanish, but it's not going to be as helpful to them learning to read as I wanted.

Simple and to the point

This is a simple book that even my husband can read in Spanish. My son loves this book. I'm not sure what it is, but he wants it read to him over and over again. It teaches mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa, cat, dog, and family. The pictures are playful. It's appropriate for toddlers.
