Great book
By K. Rowley
Wow, this is a great book - the sort that I use to love to pore over in the school library when I was a student. Industrial design has always fascinated me. Just recently, I watched two old French documentaries from Netflix that covered many of the same iconic designers & designs. Design & Design 2.
This coffee table size book (10"x12"x1") does a good job of covering some of the most famous of the designers of modern times - and it is arranged in chronological order beginning with Michael Thonet's Model 14 bentwood chair (1855) and ending with Philippe Starck's Masters chair (2010). And there is not just furniture, also included in the mix is everything from coffee makers to typewriters and even the Apple iPad. A lot of ground covered in the book's 256 pages. Each designer / design gets two pages of photos and text, along the occasional informational block of a related design or designer. The book never really goes into depth with the information it presents, it's more aimed at the casual reader.
I like the book and it will be something that I will be adding to my permanent library, and it is something I would recommend to others who have an interest in such things. I could see someone who enjoys watching Antique Roadshow also enjoy reading this book.

A casual look back at objects and their designers that have endured the test of time
By Hyytekk
The simplest litmus test for anything called "great" might be that it endures the test of time. That an object still strikes a cord of appeal and familiarity well past it's contemporary context. This book is not intended to be an in-depth and authoritative textbook for design students, but simply a coffee table book, snapshot of objects that have proven to be enduring and as pleasing to the eye as when they were first introduced. The book is set up in chronological order beginning with the Bentwood chair Model 14 from the 1860's and ending with the Master's chair from 2010. ( I might have ended with the next to last entry of the Apple iPad, also from 2010.) Many of the creations might not be obvious inclusions, but others are clearly iconic, as the Ericsson telephone DHB 1001 from 1931. (Yes, the ubiquitous black phone with the rotary dial that younger people might only recognize from Black and White movies.) The graphics are large and bold with brief details about the object. There is a small inset of each creation showing the scale of the object as well as an area labeled "Visual Tour" which hones in on 3 or 4 of the most important features of the design and illuminates them. Many also have a small box that shows the name and a photo of the designer and a paragraph describing them. As I made my way through the book, I found a big grin on my face of both appreciation as well as nostalgia. That factor will vary depending on how far back your individual "geezer-hood" extends. Personal favorites include the Tizio desk lamp from 1972, the Barcelona chair of 1929, the Volkswagon Beetle Model 1300 of 1938, and the Cadillac series 62, with its iconic tail fins designed by Harley Earl in 1959....in the color pink. This is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed on a rainy Sunday alone that will add to a casual knowledge of design as well as a multigenerational conversation stimulator with family or guests.

Innovation and Tradition
By Cynthia
The pictures in “Great Design” are incredible. The books spans from 1860 through the present with a smattering of design history from assorted disciplines, furniture, automotive, electronics, and various household goods. Since DK books usually emphasize the visual the text is not comprehensive but it provides some historic background including the impact of wars and the availability of materials had on design. I found it enlightening how iconic designs have existed for so many years with so little change, for instance the classic bentwood backed bistro chair. Which was first created in the 1860’s and can still be found in abundance today. The interplay between innovation and tradition is easy to see in “Great Design”.
