About the Author
Jonathan, an independent satellite communications consultant, was formerly the manager of BBC News Location Facilities Unit. He has been very involved in the development of both truck-based and "fly-away" SNG uplinks over the past fifteen years and is also the author of Introduction to SNG and ENG Microwave, also published by Focal Press. Widely regarded as an authority on all aspects of satellite newsgathering, he has published papers, writen articles and given numerous seminars and lectures around the world on the technical aspects of newsgathering.

The author of this excellent primer on satellite newsgathering (SNG), is an expert practitioner in the field, with years of experience in the development and operation of SNG equipment for the BBC. The book provides an in-depth look at SNG technologies and operations, logistics, satellite systems, standards, regulations, business and economic issues, and political issues. The book has dozens of helpful photos, diagrams and tables; and a glossary. This book would be an excellent addition to the reading list in journalism, communications, and telecommunications courses. It should also be in the company libraries of newsgathering organizations, radio broadcasters, and TV broadcasters. Note: This is a review of the 2000 edition of the book. A more recent edition was published in 2007.

I hired some new engineers that didn't know a thing about satellite technology. I bought a half dozen text books to educate them, and THIS IS THE BEST ONE. RF equipment, modulation, it's all there.
