Great book by a wonderful author.

CS Lewis brings a great passion filled fiction of heaven in this great tale. Though fiction, one may read it and get a full grasp of what Lewis meant in writing the book; the dark sides of human nature holding onto selfishness and ego, versus the nature of Christ in us that finds its full perfection when we surrender everything and all to Him alone.
I found this book captivating, it is a short read but packs some major depth and detail in it. I would definitely recommend this to any follower of Jesus looking to understand more about their flesh, other's flesh, and ultimately our full identity and role as followers of Jesus. One may find many things in common with the "ghosts" in the story, but hopefully you find more in common with the "spirits" in exalting the Lord Jesus above everything, including yourself.

A Truly Unique Book

I have been a C.S. Lewis fan for more than 20 years. However, this was my first time reading The Great Divorce. I'll try not to spoil it for those who have not read it, but essentially it is the story of a group of Hell-bound ghosts visiting the outskirts of Heaven and encountering the Spirits of the saved - specifically people they had known in life. As a story, it was as riveting as I have ever expected Lewis' to be. There were parts that were a bit confusing, and I definitely would not turn to this text as a sure theology of Heaven and Hell; but if nothing else it makes you think. In my opinion, unlike The Chronicles of Narnia this book is more suitable for adults. There is some mild language, and concepts are dealt with that in general children might find baffling or downright uninteresting. The book is a very quick read, and will definitely prompt some deeper thought. I recommend reading it with your Bible close at hand as to be able to better distinguish the pure theology from what is clearly fiction.

Open a Door

A fanciful and original exploration of personal and doctrinal religious concepts that should be appealing to a wide variety of religious and nonreligious readers. A good way to open a conversation with a seeker on sin and the afterlife. Lewis paints a Hell and a Heaven that are not scriptural in their details but recognizably shaped, unsurprisingly from this author, by some Christian concepts. There are several surprise reveals and a rewarding depth of conceptual foundation to entangle theologians (which is to say, people) of all flavors.
As outreach material, this is a think piece not sales literature. It excites the consideration of key concepts outside of the framework of a specific denomination or religion, making it a nonthreatening conversation starter. The story examines many false religious archetypes in picaresque fashion with a gracious humor and pity. One of my favorite works from CS Lewis, much closer to the Screwtape Letters than Perlandra or Narnia. Somewhat reminiscent of John Bunyan's the Pilgrim's Progress or even Voltaire's Candide.
Don't let the title fool you, this is not Kramer vs. Kramer. No courtrooms, no gavels, just a romp through a fictional afterlife. Today's youth are no longer exposed to this sort of material in most schools, but they need to be.
