A nice return to Shadowrun fiction

For the Shadowrun fan without a gaming group, this is a fantastic reintroduction to the world of Shadowrun, and the things that may have occurred during a hiatus from the series. Easily approachable to new readers and hardcore fans alike, it's a worthy collection, perhaps even more so than the last run of novels.

The stories skip across all parts of the Awakened world and touch on characters in all sorts of positions, from the retired soldier to the crazy surgery addict, from Seattle to the deepest urban jungles of Africa. While not all stories needed to occur in the world of Shadowrun, they fit in pretty well, especially as a vehicle to introduce new technologies such as the wireless Matrix. And hey, who knew the otaku/technomancers would start finding their place in the world?

Bottom line: if you're a fan, you're going to like this. If you're curious about Shadowrun, it's not a bad selection to whet your appetite.

Its different

I have been a longtime Shadowrun novel fan having collected and read most of them (publications prior to 2005), and I was thrilled to see that they decided to publish some more stories in the Shadowrun world. I was a bit disappointed as it seems most of the writers have little past involvement with the Shadowrn world (i.e. game rules, etc) that would have given them more of a firmer grasp of the world. Some of the stories range from good to decent to bad. The biggest gripe I had was none of the Shadowrun vernacular or slang made its way in any of the stories. I understand these take place past 2052, but the writers seem to want to distance themselves from the Shadowrun of past. I am guessing the current Shadowrun games are maybe like this, but I liked it when the deckers were called deckers and you fragged this or drekked that. Oh well, to each their own. If you are new to Shadowrun and are curious I recommend trying to find "Shadowrun 07: Into the Shadows (v. 7)" which was a great braided novel that gave you a great variety of stories from various authors that tied into a weaved plot line or anything by Nigel Findley (may he rest in peace). See you in the shadow chummers.

About the Author
Joseph Auner is Chair and Professor of Music at Tufts University. His publications include A Schoenberg Reader, The Cambridge Companion to Schoenberg (with Jennifer Shaw), and Postmodern Music/Postmodern Thought (with Judith Lochhead). A past editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Auner is the recipient of grants from the Getty Center for the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Walter Frisch is H. Harold Gumm/Harry and Albert von Tilzer Professor of Music at Columbia University. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Brahms: The Four Symphonies, The Early Works of Arnold Schoenberg 1903–1908, and German Modernism: Music and the Arts. He is the recipient of two ASCAP-Deems Taylor Awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library.

One of the top science fiction books that I have read!

I love Sci-Fi books and I have read them for over 60 years. I have read thousands of Sci-Fi books. This book, written by Eric Nylund, is one of my favorites of all time. Just as a note, I don't play the Halo game so my review is only about the quality of the book.

This story is absolutely full of action, aliens, military combat and of course the superhuman feats of the Spartan II warriors. This is a team of warriors that know no fear and each one can fight like a thousand other soldiers combined. Trained since the age of 6, genetically mutated and enhanced they have become the strongest military force in the galaxy. Coupled with a super smart Artificial Intelligence, AI named Cortana, they are unbeatable. Put them into their Mjolnir Assault Armor and they are almost virtually invincible.

This book cames after the story about The Flood. Eric Nylund is the best author to write any of the Halo books. His books are by far the best stories and they are just superb Sci-Fi. I won't ruin the plot of the book as to many other reviews have already done that but if you love Halo stories this is one of the books you must read. I liked the book so much I purchased the Kindle version, then the large paperback version for my library and then the audio CD version to listen to in my car. I have read or listened to the book 5 times already.

If you love super heroes you will love the Master Chief and what he does in this book. Get it, you will love it.

Good, but not the best

Eric Nylund has proven himself as a stellar author helming Halo novels, including his first and perhaps best work, The Fall of Reach. I don't feel that First Strike quite lives up to the level of quality you'll find in Fall of Reach, but it is a good addition to the series. To date, First Strike is still the last book in the main story arc of the Halo universe, following Master Chief. Ghosts of Onyx is technically further on in the timeline, but it deals mostly with characters that do not appear in the games.

First Strike Happens between the games Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, from how Master Chief survived his encounter with Halo to how he gets to the beginning of Halo 2. There's a lot of adventure to be had along the way, from cramped hallway firefights to interstellar battles between multiple spaceships. You'll get lots of new information about the universe, such details on the operations of ONI and a glimpse into the secret lives of Covenant Engineers. Nylund continues to do stellar work, writing good characters and better action sequences.

First Strike came dangerously close to falling off the rails with a few overly complicated plot points. Keeping spoilers to a minimum, part of the plot revolves around Master Chief and friends gaining posession of a crystal that alters time and space. During one space battle in particular, ships aren't where they appear to be and technology stops working in normal ways. This makes things very messy for the crew, and for the reader. Nylund is a really gifted writer when it comes to action sequences, but I don't think any author could fully accomplish juggling everything that's at play here. Things are just too jumbled, and the story suffers as a result.

Aside from the bits where there's just too much going on at once, this is an overall very good book. I'd definitely recommend this book to fans of the game rather than fans of the novels. It's clear that Bungie wasn't settled about what they were doing for the second game by the time First Strike was going to press. Because of this, Nylund ties up all his loose ends. The ending of the book wraps everything up in such a neat package, that even if there are more books to come in the timeline, they can safely ignore the events of this book and pick up elsewhere. Things are just a little too neat when it's all said and done, which would make this a very forgettable read if you're not playing the game.

This is also not the best entry point for the series. If you're new to the Halo universe, you should either play the original Xbox game, or read The Fall of Reach. Fall of Reach serves as a prequel to the first videogame, and is notable for being one of the better books in the line. Fall of Reach is good enough that I recommend it to readers regardless of whether they play videogames or not.

If you want to continue on in the series, you would read First Strike before playing Halo 2 (or reading Ghosts of Onyx, which overlaps with Halo 2). It is not necessary to read First Strike to appreciate anything else in the Halo universe, and it doesn't even add much when read between playing Halo 1 and Halo 2. In this respect, First Strike ties The Flood for being one of the most expendable works in the series. Speaking of which, do not skip playing Halo: Combat Evolved in favor of reading The Flood, which is generally agreed to be one of the least well-written of the novels.

Highly recommended to Halo series completionists, First Strike comes weakly recommended to general sci-fi readers who may or may not play the games.

Nylund does it again with First Strike!

For some, the Halo Series has been at it's best when written by Eric Nylund. While the Flood certainly wasn't bad, combined with the fact that it was written by a different author with a plot that most of us knew, made it a little boring but nonetheless a more indepth version of Halo.

However, Nylund is back and so is his brilliant style of writing and conveying scenes of non-stop acting in First Strike.
Those who have loved the series so far will continue to be impressed with the newest novel until the one which will tell the story of Halo 2.

First Strike, picks up pretty much right where Halo (The Flood) leaves off with John and Cortana floating in space in the hope of finding survivors. They find survivors and embark on a quest to find Reach and possibly any Spartan's left on it. Without spoiling the book too much, John will have some backup for the upcoming war with the Covenant.

Overall, if you haven't read this book you're missing out on a great preview to Halo 2 and a great read for any science fiction fan as well.

For those wondering what exactly the Liberty Tuning is

Harvey Reid has long been one of my favorite folk or fingerstyle guitarists and folk singers. He is a true master of all kinds of stringed instruments like the guitar, banjo, 12-string, even the autoharp. I've seen him in concert twice and first bought a CD of his in the mid 80's. Now this Liberty thing is a cool system for quickly altering the guitar with a capo (well a special partial capo on only 3 strings) and teaching someone to be able to play the guitar with only two fretting fingers. I don't know if it's obvious or not but this is just a vastly easier way to play chords then having to use 3 or 4 fingers that most chords require. So you're thinking this could be very limiting, as most other re-tunings turn out to be, but Reid has recorded a few very accomplished albums showing plenty of sophisticated fingerstyle playing in various keys all on the same Liberty tuning. Essentially all the chords you would ever really need to play in most keys can be played with only the two fingers.

Obviously, the Liberty chord fingerings are completely different from standard chords and notation, which is what you really need the book for - Reid has worked out all the chords. So if you want to play the guitar in the standard way eventually, you will have to re-learn everything. I don't think that should put anyone off, as that's true of any simpler instrument, like if you start on a ukulele, all the chords are completely different from a guitar. You can play just about anything having chords as long as you have a Liberty chord table. But Mr Reid also as written a number of books with songs and tunes that work well with the system. I would probably say it's well worth it to buy a book or two along with the capo when getting into the system.

The other cool thing is that kids don't have to reach as far up the neck of the guitar - all fingering is done after the capo at the 4th fret so its easy to reach. So use a regular old guitar and you don't have to buy a special small kid's guitar that they will never want to play when they outgrow it.

If you're curious - here's HOW TO TUNE A GUITAR TO THE LIBERTY TUNING: As stated, you need one of Mr. Reid's partial capos that cleverly barre off 3 and only 3 strings. Starting with the standard tuning EADGBE, first just re-tune the B string up to C. Then put the partial capo on the neck at the 4th fret, across the D, G, B (now C) strings.

And no, any regular capo that I've ever seen will not work, as you are barring off strings in the center and leaving the low and high strings alone.

Actually I guess there is an alternate Liberty tuning, and other tunings, that barre off 4 strings or something, and these Flip 34 capos can be flipped over to barre off 4 strings. The world of partial capos is deeper than just the Liberty method, but that's a whole other story.

Absolutely the way to go if you aren't willing or able to devote long hours of study and practice to becoming a proficient guitar player! I am an advanced intermediate (30+ years) player, and am always willing to explorer new ways to make music. This method is an efficient and achievable way to play many popular and traditional songs using a partial capo. It is like shorthand for the fretboard, and will increase your playing enjoyment exponentially in proportion to the minimal time you devote to it. No additional musical knowledge or training necessary, other than familiarity with a guitar. Clearly explained and illustrated by Harvey Reid, who has been playing and providing guitar insights for over 40 years. Well worth the small cost, it is a self-contained and effective system.

Easy to read book of ideas

This book reads like a recipe book for success. Not all recipes will work for you. Some you won't agree with. But you can't argue that the book provides a good overview of design perspectives and approaches that have worked for a wide range of design problems. I've given it 5 stars because I find so many other "design recipe" style books out there tend to be big and heavy, too much on the detail, striving for how to do things "right". With design, no book can prescribe a right way of doing things - it's about craft, not systems. This is a good book I'll come back to for reference again and again.

easy to read and very inspiring

To the point, Easy to read and Brilliantly laid out.

I work in a trading company and we have over the last 18 months been working on tech products. Being an employee this has been a very very frustrating journey as things have not been running smoothly and this is due to many issues and mainly down to management. "101 Design ingredient to solve big tech problem" Gives you an insite of what not to do as well as what you can do to make things easier in terms of running a business. I can also relate this to other businesses not only Tech.

What i love about this book is the many Quotes you get from many famous influential people and also the Sketches provided for each ingredient. very well thought out and as i said before very easy to read.

Read and learn people. I am sure if you are all ready in the trade this will relate to many of your frustation as well as you successes.
