A trip down memory lane

This tribute to a successful, driven businessman of the late 19th to mid 20th century, is told by family members who share their first hand recollections of the man, his ideas, and his publications. We read intimate details of the life of his large family, their homes, travels, children, hobbies (sports), friends, and personal tragedies. Mr. Collier began his career in the business office of a coal mine in West Virginia and from there spawned a direct mail order campaign that transformed the way business was transacted in those times. His sales pitches and techniques became hugely popular as did his books on his "positive" thinking ideas. He would wind up working in the family publishing company which was kept alive as a thriving enterprise by family members. He was interested in health foods, exercise, and put his family first. Parts of this book are devoted to his children's memories of life with their father and mother who maintained homes in New York and Florida. This would be of interest to readers who enjoy reminiscenses of that time period. My thanks to the author and Goodreads for a complimentary copy.

Blessed Be God - 1960 Edition

Beautifully constructed and bound. Faithful to the the letter regarding its previous editions, it is exactly like my original copy from the early 1950s, expect that this one is not falling apart. It will and does make for an excellent prayer and devotional book and also acts as a unique heirloom for a devout family. Preserving Christian Publications has given the world another beautiful work of literary/devotional art just like Baronius Press consistently does.

You will not be disappointed and I couldn't be happier especially with the inclusion of the Imitation of Christ, the Latin Mass and prayers and several stunning lithographs.

A Treasury of Traditional Catholic Prayers and Devotions in One Compact Book

Blessed Be God is my absolute favorite prayer book. It's an exact reprint of the original 1960 edition by Rev. Charles J. Callan, OP.,S.T.M. Rev. John McHugh, OP.,S.T.M.

The book comes beautifully bound in a leather softcover with rounded and gilded page edges, and a marking ribbon. Don't let the size fool you though, this compact book is fully indexed and contains a treasury of Catholic prayers and devotions. This a Pre-Vatican 2 prayer book so the Mass and the Church calendar follow the traditional Tridentine Rite. Also included are:
- Table of Feasts and Fasts, and Moveable Feasts
- Brief Statement of Christian Doctrine
- Morning & Evening Prayers
- Devotions for Holy Days and special feasts, and the seasons of the year
- Devotions to The Blessed Trinity
- Devotions to The Blessed Virgin
- Devotions to St. Joseph
- Devotions and novenas in honor of the Saints
- Prayers for the living
- Prayers for the sick and the dying
- Prayers for the dead

I find myself reaching for this on Sundays when I don't feel like carrying my 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal as it contains the Ordinary of the Mass for the traditional Tridentine (Latin) Mass. Along with the Ordinary texts of the Mass (in Latin and English), Sunday Epistles and Gospels (English only), Propers for the Requiem and Nuptial Mass (in Latin and English), Sunday Vespers, the other sacramental rites such as Baptism and Extreme Unction (in English), and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament are also included.

You'll find some beautiful, symbolic lithographs and poignant prayers composed by the Saints including St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Bonaventure, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, St. Clare of Assisi, St. Alphonsus Ligouri, and St. Ambrose.

For meditation, it contains devout reflections and meditations on the Christian virtues drawn from the Holy Scripture, and The Imitation Of Christ.

Beautiful, compact and truly a classic prayer book! Blessed Be God indeed!

Good book on success take aways

I initially bought it to learn more about billionaires and those who created their own family offices but found it more self-improvement and success type book rather than case studies of the super rich...but I liked it just the same.

Here's a summary of the first few chapters (I quit reading after that): If you want a "rah-rah" book that doesn't actually share a new idea, this is your book. Poorly written with plenty of grammatical errors.

Clever with a touch of humor.

If you're like me and can't seem to find a decent book in the fantasy genre anymore then you should check this series out.

The best way to explain it is to say it is roughly what the Wheel of Time series would have been like if it were a trilogy and written from the point of view of someone who wasn't "the one." It's actually an interesting, and sometimes humorous, take on the usual fantasy prescription. To be honest I didn't really expect much from the book but after reading the Kindle free sample I bought it with the justification that the sample was decent enough to see where it goes from there. I'm glad I did. Worth every penny and the better part of two days that I put into reading it (and the same for the sequel).

The good:

- The author doesn't drown you in minutiae about all the crap you really don't care about when describing a scene, room, place, person, or whatever. I liked Robert Jordan but half of each of his books were describing the details of a piece of trim in the corner of the room or some such. No such thing here. You get the idea and can picture it in your mind without falling asleep or skipping pages to get to the interesting part. The story is almost always progressing as you read.

- One of the most interesting magic systems I have seen in a long long time. Simple but clever.

- The important people are believable. There is some depth and complexity to all of the important main and side characters.

The bad:

- The lack of detail does sometimes get in the way of an otherwise engrossing story. I didn't always get a good feel for what someone or something looked like. It's not enough to ruin things entirely. Just a weak point.

- The point of view changes were informative but I felt like they took away from the story subtly. The side characters who got their 15 minutes of fame weren't important (and lasting) enough to warrant an actual point of view from the perspective of the story as a whole.

- The story feels a little rough around the edges. Not first draft rough, jut not quite as polished as it could be. I feel like it could have been expanded a little to give a... richer experience. You didn't get the "the world is alive and changing" feeling that you get with some of the more accomplished authors.

Final thoughts:

Despite the bad points I listed above, the series is really quite engaging and a very good read. The author's bio says he is only 23 which would go a long way to explaining why some of the work feels the way it does. All in all, this is a very promising start in the fantasy genre for someone with a real talent for clever story. In another 10 years, with more experience, I fully expect his writing to be spectacular. It's good, just not "great" - yet.

Read all 3 but gets a 3

5 is for the best (would then try to read everything by the author)
4 for very good (definitely read a series or try another title by the author)
3 for enjoyable, 2 for I finished but wouldn't return soon and 1 for please don't waste your time

This was a solid 3 and I finished all books in the trilogy before writing. No spoilers, no content relating to the story here.

The good:
- Unique and original settings / worlds
- 'Some' interesting characters
- Some very good scene sequences
- Easy reading

The bad:
- 'Some' not interesting characters and fillers
- Inconsistencies in statements about characters or environments throughout the book
- At times, reads like a YA title especially with some statements by characters (which sometimes seem way out of place)

Not a bad read and was interested enough to finish all 3 but wouldn't say this is close to a 5 star or even a 4 star title. What kept me drawn in was the unique way to achieve greater skills, the primary character and one of the secondary. If you try the first, the 2nd and 3rd are very similar. If you don't like it, it doesn't necessarily get better, just an extension of the same style of writing.

An Enjoyable Fast Read But Lacks Substance

Everything in this book is extremely well done... the plot, the action, the imagery... but the depth is shallow. Having read both books in the series, I still don't have a feel for the characters, especially WHO they are and WHY they think the way they do. Character development in this series seems to take a backseat to the action and plot.

Will Wight spends very little time building the background of his characters. Their origins, their experiences, their mistakes, their successes. This results in the characters behaving in ways that make no sense. The king who is portrayed the entire series as being this ruthless and cold dictator turns out to actually be conscientious and caring. In fact, he's been working in the best interest of the entire world the whole time. Surprise! Yet no one seems aware of this fact and it only becomes apparent at the very end. It's not as if he had some kind of epiphany or revelation and turned over a new leaf... he has simply been like that all along. This clashes with how he has behaved the entire book, but we're not told why he's acted so different from his true character.

This goes on and on with each character. In all honesty, this could have easily been a 5 book series, instead of 3. However, on the whole I enjoyed this book immensely and eagerly await the final installment in the trilogy!

Oh wow that came out way too calm. Like control to the extreme. Darkly glowing, very penetrating eyes, boring into hers; all the hair on her body stood on end. Danger, danger, danger! Her legs felt like they were stuck in quicksand.
He took another step closer. “Spineless?” … another step.
Kayla backed up for every step he advanced her heart pounding painfully against her chest. She swore she saw flames flickering behind the dark vibrant colors in his oh-my-god-I’m-so-in-trouble-now eyes. She swallowed. “Ah….” had she ever felt so afraid – so… alive?
“Coward?” Zak had backed her into the wall – she wasn’t going any further. “Scared?” He braced his forearms against the wall on either side of her head, leaning his bulk inward, hemming her in blocking her escape as she tried to duck around him. “Ah ah ah,” he warned softly.
Kayla quickly glanced to both sides and all she saw was gorgeous tan biceps bulging out from under the hem of a t-shirt with the slightest of movement – in her face. Okay don’t panic, you have options. Scream like the Devil is after your soul – and oh gawd that may be true. Option two: Tears – lots and lots of tears. No… I’m no good at tears and he’d probably figure out real quick that they were fake – yeah like when they failed to fall. Okay… Option three: You’re wearing your big girl panties so option three should be to cowgirl up – be brave, forget he has fangs and magical vampire powers… and kills people. Confront him. Brows narrowed as she pressed her lips one, two, or three? Her chest heaved – pulse pounded.
Zak watched her with his predator eyes, waiting to see which option his little spitfire was going to choose.

A very good follow up to Garden of Stones

This is the second exciting installment in Jody Offen's Guardian of the Night series about vampires who rid humanity of the low lifes who destroy it.

In this installment, Tray meets Kayla while hunting a criminial to find that she is seeking revenge for the death of her father by the very same man. He is instantly captivated by Kayla and the sparks fly despite the danger that surrounds them.

This second book was edited for a lot of the spelling and gramatical errors found in the first installment. There were still a few in there, but overall, these do not affect the story and are much fewer this time.

The book is thrilling and I am anxiously awaiting a third installment - hopefully with Dare and Tiannia's story!

Great Reading Vampire Guardians

This second book of Jody Offen's Guardian of the Night series is just as exciting as the first. It's about vampires who rid the world of the drug dealers, murderers, and rapists.

In this series Tray meets Kayla a fiesty petite woman seeking revenge for the death of her father. Tray at the same time is also hunting this man for judgement and punishment. He is instantly captivated by Kayla and is drawn to her and knows that they are to be soul mates and he must protect her from whatever danger awaits.

I loved this book as well as the first one, I found it to be exciting and entertaining. I loved the humor and the personality of the characters. I am anxiously awaiting a third installment - hopefully with Dare and Tiannia's story! I would also like to know about Torin and Jenaver.

A little editing could go a long way...

I wanted to like this book so badly. Unfortunately, the not so original plot line was buried beneath poor grammar, punctuation, and only a rudimentary usage of the English language. The female character was even more disappointing. She who starts with a backbone will ultimately lose it for the sake of great sex with a "man" who will manipulate her for entertainment or convenience. I was not impressed.
I think there was a lot of potential to turn this into a really fun read but it was missed horribly.

Running never felt so good

I am an off and on runner, but I have never had much guidance on the subject. If Glover has provided anything, it is plenty of guidance in this book. This covers everything a beginning runner could possibly think about - sportswear, motivation, running shoes, stretches, etc. One reader complained about having too much info. Good grief. Skip a chapter if you don't want to learn about it. I highly recommend this book to all budding runners. I plan on referring to it often as I continue running. The only nit I may have is that this books hasn't been updated in a while, so there may be new technologies out there that aren't reflected. This is a minor problem and can be remedied with a little bit of internet research. 5 stars to the running bible.

recommended for every runner

... However, I laughed today when I saw the "sell this book" button on this page and thought to myself NEVER. This and the competitive runners guide (start with this one unless you are definitely ready to start racing and run regularly already) are books that I take everywhere with me. I hardly have time for novels anymore between my running and my rereading of these two books and I've never been happier ....
I was until December a consummate couch potato and now I'm running in the New York City Marathon this coming November and I owe it all to Bob and Shelly-Lynne Glover and these books. I don't need to go further as all you have to do is read nigel's review from London and you have my experience with these books.
Oh, I do want to say one thing although it was mentioned in another review as well. I think the reason most people try and give up running and say it isn't for them is that they go out and try to run 2 miles or 20 minutes or something that seems reasonable to them, but really isn't. Take it gradually as the book advices and you will love running and avoid the aches, pains, disappointments, and difficulties that others run into or you may have before in your life.
Don't bother with any of the other running books. This is the one you want.

This will KEEP you running

If you are serious about getting into running or back into it, BUY this book. I was a runner in highschool and have been an on-again, off-again runner throughout college. I was missing something to help me stick to it. This book helped me tremedously with all of the tips and training programs provided. I love the book so much I recommended it to a friend and I am going to now buy the competitive runner's guide. I have owned the book since January and I have been running consistantly since then, probably my longest period of consistant running since highschool. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy and good luck running!
