After nearly five thousand years of prohibition against the Greeks, they were permitted to enter Egypt for the purpose of their education. First through the Persian invasion and secondly through the invasion of Alexander the Great. From the sixth century B.C. therefore to the death of Aristotle (322 B.C.) the Greeks made the best of their chance to learn all they could about Egyptian culture; most students received instructions directly from the Egyptian Priests, but after the invasion by Alexander the Great, the Royal temples and libraries were plundered and pillaged, and Aristotle’s school converted the library at Alexandria into a research center. There is no wonder then, that the production of the unusually large number of books ascribed to Aristotle has proved a physical impossibility, for any single man within a lifetime.

The book is an attempt to show that the true authors of Greek philosophy were not the Greeks, but the people of North Africa, commonly called the Egyptians; and the praise and honor falsely given to the Greeks for centuries belong to the people of North Africa, and therefore to the African Continent. Consequently, this theft of the African legacy by the Greeks led to the erroneous world opinion that the African Continent has made no contribution to civilization, and that its people are naturally backward. This is the misrepresentation that has become the basis of race prejudice, which has affected all people of color.

About the Author
Professor George G. M. James was born in Guyana, South America and he earned several degrees from Durham University in England. James also earned certificates in the United States to teach mathematics, Latin, and Greek. He later served as a Professor in the areas of logic, Greek, language studies, philosophy, mathematics, and social sciences including his last five years at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In 1954, he published the groundbreaking work, Stolen Legacy, which challenged the idea of the “immaculate conception” of Greek philosophy.

This book is terrible but I understand the purpose

Hotep, I first read this book when I was 11 or 12 and I really liked it then. Unfortunately, this book is hideously flawed with regard to accuracy. As I grew older and increased my personal knowledge of Kemet/Egypt the inadequacy of this work became ridiculously obvious. James' representations of Kemetic thought are completely erroneous. That being said, I do not side with James' other critics on this page. I appreciate what he attempted to do for African people and I understand the brutality of the environment in which he operated. I honor him as an Ancestor. At the same time I am not pleased when I see people (particularly Black people) using this inaccurate work in their attempts to combat the well armed and well entrenched Eurocentrists and Neo-Eurocentrists. Neo-Eurocentrists and Eurocentrists find this book incredibly useful to their cause. Stolen Legacy is used to dismiss a diverse Afrocentric movement as a bunch of dreamers, demagouges, and ill prepared romantics. Another note: I found it very amusing how certain contributors to this page confidently stated or implied that "the Egyptians are not Black" or that "Egypt had no connection to Sub-Saharan Africa." (smile) Very cute, however one might actually want to study Kemetic religion, history, language, and culture before opening their mouths to make such inane statements. This is particularly the case with regard to Egyptian history, language, religion, and culture. The "Blackness" of this African people is not really an issue for me (I'm sure Kemet was not absolutely homogeneous)but it annoys me when silly people confidently assert that these AFRICANS were not Black. Another note: Kemet/Egypt is not the only great African civilization. Those who truly want to study Africa, live as Africans, and or assist in her ressurection cannot allow themselves to be confined to to a single branch of the African family. One more VERY IMPORTANT thing. Black/African people, particularly those who call themselves "Afrocentrists" need to stop focusing so much upon our relationship to Greece and other European civilizations. 1. We need to study Africa and our people in our own right and through our own eyes. "Proof" of our contribution or relationship with a European Civilization should not be viewed as a way of legitimizing or increasing the status of a given African Civilization. 2. Greece and European Civilizations can stand in their own right. Eurocentrists and Neo-Eurocentrists do not usually view themselves as such. They view themselves as "orthodox", "careful", "OBJECTIVE", and "SCHOLARLY" (whether they are or not). The fact is they are the established camp and they hold a greater following upon the masses. We must put works such as "Stolen Legacy" to rest and make sure that in our pursuits we are commited to accuracy and truth. This is the only path towards victory. The multitude of African Civilizations are interesting, wonderful, and legitimate without any fantasy and romanticism added to them. Black Egyptians

An anonymous reviewer who calls himself "A reader" asked the question, "If Egyptians were black, why aren't they black now?" The answer is, much of Egypt's modern population IS black (Malcom X noted that the people of Egypt were blacker than he). Those Egyptians who are not black are the product of Roman and Arab invasions centuries ago that resulted in intermarriages. The modern Islamic Egyptian culture was imported by light-skinned Arabs. Many historians agree that even until the time of Arabian invasion, the vast majority of egyptians were black(negroid). I hope that this was helpful.

Significant Egyptian philosophic achievements and theories, which were in vogue at the end of the Neolithic period were a lot more widespread than conventional wisdom would have us believe. The rationale for why the so-called "Fathers of Hellenistic Thought" were generally persecuted for advancing ideas they plagiarized from a True Mother Culture is advanced with a considerable body of credible, supporting evidence. Unfortunately, current politics and social dynamics of the Western World will continue to portray the important contributions of the Dynasties to human social evolution as being of "Hellenistic" Origin.

Interesting read for the conscious traveler

I was assigned this book for a class and I admit I had put off reading it. However, I did start to read it when I went on my latest vacation to Central America. When I started reading the book, I was a little turned off because I thought it was filled with a lot of common sense. However, as I continued to read and continued to travel, the book really started to resonate with me. It's a great read for someone traveling somewhere a bit off the beaten path or a bit outside of your comfort zone, and reminds you to be observant throughout your travels and really appreciate traveling to new places and meeting new people.

Gentle and Profound Wisdom

I am so grateful to have found this book. I read many books that discuss spiritual paths so it is a true delight to come across a book with as much wisdom and clarity as "The Art of Surrender." At first I began to skim through the book as I am apt to do, but found myself wanting to return to the opening pages and read it more thoroughly from beginning to end. I did not want to miss anything. What attracted me was not just the profound thoughts being expressed but the manner in which those thoughts were expressed. The author has a gentle, peaceful way of self-expression that I was drawn to the tone of the book as much as I was drawn to the content. You get a true sense that the author is authentic; that she lives what she writes which makes her ideas and concepts even more compelling. More remarkable to me, the author is a young woman but her words suggest she is an old soul. If you seek to move closer to the Divine this book may give you a certain clarity to help you on your journey. It is truly a remarkable book. I hope to read more of this author's works in the coming years.

"Most of us live from the outside in” is one of my favorite quotes from the introduction.

For me, this book has been about learning to connect. We live in a world where rationality reigns supreme. In this world where the brain rules the heart, striving to keep at bay its landmines of vulnerability, the individual becomes the singular unit of being. We inhabit a world of alleged creative individuals, whose ultimate success is measured by a life of socially sanctioned achievements and attained milestones. “Most of us live from the outside in,” is one of my favorite quotes from the introduction. Yet, Eiman reminds us that creativity lies in precisely what we’ve been socialized to avoid: connection. Individuation substantiates our rigid boundaries of self, preventing us from connecting to others. Truly connecting necessitates vulnerability, and in our goal-driven, capitalist world, vulnerability is a serious liability. We really don’t have time to fall apart, and there is no social infrastructure to help us deal with that. I am certain, however, that many of us have reached for this book because we’ve experienced incredible pain, pain created by loss and disjuncture--the very symptoms of disconnection--and strove to find some palliative relief in its promise of increased spirituality.

Still, this book is not an exposition on the meaning of spirituality. Neither is it an extolment of religion. No. Eiman provides us with a framework with which to conceptualize and subsequently participate in the creation of fulfilling lives for ourselves. What does that entail? “Moving into a state of connection,” she tells us. A state of connection, we learn, starts with finding the source of all creation. In acknowledging the oneness of creation and subsequently seeking it out, we not only begin to live in alignment with our life’s purpose, we start to recognize that all individual and social ailments that plague our current world stem from our inability to recognize our common oneness. Here in the United States, we’re still negotiating concepts of race, with memories of Travyon Martin, Eric Garner, and Michael Brown, reminding us that a world post Jim Crow continues to reflect deeply rooted social, economic and structural inequalities. News stories about whether or not migrants and refugees are welcome, in a land that itself was settled by refugees who unabashedly obliterated the stories of its indigenous inhabitants, drives home the inconvenient reality that not all lives are perceived to be equal. But in altering our perception away from our individuality to our unity with one creator, Eiman shows us how we can begin to shift towards an existence of complementary synergism, not domination. Efforts towards social change are moot unless we start with the self.

Recognizing the oneness of creation starts from within us. Once we recognize the source, we must surrender to it. Eiman’s conceptualization of surrender is not a passive deference to divine will; on the contrary, it is a proactive process, and she offers us a multipronged system of activities, meditations, and energy healing work to embark on this process. Surrender is a dialectic between ourselves and what she strategically terms as Source in order to enable us to reflect on our definition of the divine. Understanding this dialectical exchange between ourselves and our creator is to participate in the very activity of being human and honor our creative power. Through reading this book, I have come to realize that miracles are not just cosmic life-altering events; rather they are the stuff of little steps, the methodical practice of life’s rituals. Through these methodical engagements, we learn to harness our creativity. And as we work from a place of mindful surrender, we learn the merits of being vulnerable, of tempering our boundaries so that we can not only connect to source, but also cultivate a life less concerned with performance and external achievements, a life that is abundant in creative promise, fulfillment, and, most importantly, love. Connection, Eiman teaches, arises when we learn to listen, firstly to the voice of the divine, and subsequently to those that share the world we inhabit.

This a truly compelling book because it is ultimately an offer of a conversation, written by an author whose honest and simple tone exhorts me to perceive her as a longtime friend and thus address her by her first name. It is an offer of a conversation, however, with ourselves; yet, Eiman joins along, mediating the journey and scaffolding the process in small practicable steps. The power of this book lies not only in the individual transformation and self-fulfillment that it promises, but the potential for significant social change that naturally ensues from the aligned and connected lives we lead as surrendering individuals. Ultimately, I am grateful for Eiman's voice in this book for it has warmly nudged me towards a reality that I have been too afraid to embrace: that I matter in this world, and so does my voice. Getting to this place is an ongoing journey, but one where a great life of adventure truly begins. For anyone on a journey of finding meaning and inspiration in this strange life that we've inherited, this book will have something to offer you.

This longing for self-worth becomes deeply disappointed when it is searched for outside one’s soul

The Art of Surrender is a masterful guide for personal transformation.

From proclaiming to be a helpless hypochondriac, Eiman Al Zaabi takes the reader into the inner recesses of her own soul in order to provide the reader a new light for salvation. This type of salvation is appreciated as self-validation – the seal of approval that arises from core of one’s own divine essence. Being a middle child as well, Eiman speaks to my own yearnings to be recognized and feel significant. This longing for self-worth becomes deeply disappointed when it is searched for outside one’s soul. Truly, only the soul knows one’s true value and divine purpose on earth.

The Art of Surrender empowers the reader to not agree with every statement the author puts forth. Even though every other line in the book is a thought-provoking quote, I found myself disagreeing with many of the passages. Eiman skillfully encourages readers to stand in their own power and dares them to embrace self-awareness through appreciating their own personal belief systems. The interplay between self and soul is the same relationship that exists between personal intentions and divine consciousness - helplessness and empowerment – uncertainty and freedom.

Transformation is generally perceived as an overwhelming experience. Similarly, The Art of Surrender is an overpowering exercise in attentiveness. This book makes the lofty statement, “All the pieces you’ve been trying to put together fall into place.” Keeping this promise, the book presents the Chaos Theory and puts the capital “T” in Truth - all while kneading and nurturing the proposition of proper alignment. We all wish to feel good about ourselves and having a worthwhile existence. The Art of Surrender provides the ways and means to achieving everlasting fulfillment.

The essence of Peake's theory is that death is something that happens to other people.

There are many threads in Peake's argument, which he tries to bring together at the end of his book. En route it's an interesting journey through the twilight zones of quantum physics, the science of the brain, and human experience, mostly documented by individuals and therefore "unproven."

Peake seems keen to prove that all of human experience takes place within the brain, which is in his view the seat of consciousness. But, in contrast with other materialists, Peake uses scientific evidence to argue that there is no death, as far as the individual is concerned. At the point of death, he argues, the chemicals in our brains which affect our perception of time slow that perception down to a virtual standstill. At this point our brains run through what he calls a Bohmian Imax (named for the physicist David Bohm) , creating a "virtual reality" replay of our entire lives. Everyone else watching us sees us die, but from our point of view we never do.

I am of course oversimplifying a theory that takes Peake several hundred pages to elucidate. But that is the nub of it. There are a number of obvious queries that arise from it. The most obvious is the sheer solipcism of the whole thing. If we are hallucinating our lives as we lie on the ground somewhere bleeding to death, what are we to make of the people with whom we imagine we are spending our lives ? How can they be anything more than 'sims'? If Peake or any of his followers sincerely believe that they are experiencing the Bohmian IMAX, how can they treat anyone else with the respect that a real human being might expect?

Peake claims to have dealt with this question in his book, but this reader at least didn't get it. At one point he brings in the concept of parallel universes, to suggest that when we die, a new world branches off in which we "escape" from the danger that kills us in one world. But this would appear to be a different road completely than starting our lives all over again "eternal return" style. Does he mean that we actually keep going on one road and start all over again on another? Peake claims somewhat annoyingly that parallel universes are a proven fact, but it's also a fact that a lot of physicists don't believe in them.

There are other problems. Do we always know when we are going to die, so that we can slow time down quickly enough (!) to live our lives over and over again? It is hard not to believe that there are many times in which sudden death would win the race with the brain chemicals.

Peake argues that the "life review" which people who have near-death-experiences describe is proof of his theory. In my opinion, it's not. Descriptions of life reviews usually involve some sense of observation, whereas Peake's proposal involves a three-dimensional re-experience of one's whole life, repeated ad-infinitum.

On the other hand it must be said the author raises enough questions and highlights enough bizzare phenomena for us to at least be forced to admit that something is happening Mr Peake ... but we don't know what it is. Is There life After Death? is like a more erudite version of Ripley's Believe It Or Not. And his attempts at holism are admirable. He has since published another book, which I have not read, called The Daemon, and he does say that he and a colleague are working on the original theory with a new line that seems to involve some sort of collective unconscious.

How this would be sustained in his materialistic model of life I'm not sure. Peake rejects telepathy, ghosts, reincarnation and indeed anything outside the brain in Is There Life After Death?, when I believe his model would be well-served by adopting the ideas of Rupert Sheldrake, and conceding that there are waves and fields which don't have a material existence and don't required the continued existence of brains to sustain them.

Excellent and thought provoking.

Is There Life After Death by British author Anthony Peake is a brilliant book. It is a very hard, but extremely interesting read and would be helped greatly by a table of contents and index. However, it is a must read by all people interested in this genre, absolutely and unequivocally.

In this book, Peake attempts to update the ideas of J.W. Dunne in the light of the latest theories of quantum physics, neurology and consciousness studies.

The basic premise is that nearing the point of death, you actually never die and the brain gushes with glutamate, as it did once before, during birth, and you re-live your current life again in a virtual reality generated by the brain (or something else) - a Groundhog Day existence, so to speak. This is due to the fact that time dilates and you literally enter a time-less state or at least a state where time is near endless. This is alluded to by the way your perception of time changes dramatically throughout your life for one reason or another - dreaming, playing, getting bored, endangered, excited, sad and so on. Dropping out of time is what Peake calls it.

Come the near time of your virtual reality death, the process is repeated, ad infinitum so it seems. The doctrine is called Recurrence and it seems the ancient Greeks and others alluded to it, so we find Peake uses Greek terminology for some of his concepts.

Peake uses the fact that time is not constant as well as the NDE, deja-vu, epilepsy and a host of neurological diseases to convince you to believe Recurrence. He does this quite well, but as with anything, the judgement is up to you. In fact, I found that some of the arguments materialists use to bludgeon a random and meaningless existence where they are the final arbiters of truth and the high priests of knowledge and wisdom, Peake uses to good effect in proving his point which is contra to theirs.

He uses quantum physics theory and its interpretation to convince us that the virtual life and all those thereafter are not exactly the same, as you have the freedom to choose and thus enter a different parallel universe with each choice you make.

Deja-vu is a glitch in the system, when you actually remember the previous Recurrence of your virtual life.

NDE is more or less another glitch in the system where your next Recurrence is prematurely triggered and you come back and call it a "Life Review". You're actually alive and the next virtual life starts running.

Prophecy alludes to Recurrence too, according to Peake and his argument here is that prophets like Nostradamus, are exceptionally good at predicting future events within the time span of their lives, but hopeless once past their date of death. That's because they're somehow remembering their previous Recurrence and can't gather information outside their existence. Get a young prophet is the message here as they should be able to see more years into the future, their future as well as yours.

Don't be fooled, while I believe the title is quite banal, the book reeks of freshness and originality.

In fact it's the first non-study book, I'm going to read again (over 400 pages worth) and take notes, so that I can remember the concepts. I hope I have them correct for the purposes of this review.

It's a rare thing for me to rave about a book. I love to read and consequently, I read a lot of books and am often disappointed. Not so with "Is There Life after Death" by Anthony Peake. In fact, this was a book that I couldn't and didn't want to put down and yet had to just to think about its content. It's well researched, well written and frankly well published in the sense that it's a quality book too for the price. Peake has a slightly humorous writing style yet delivers on content and punch.
So what is the book about? Well, it's really not about life after death and to some extent the title seems an odd choice. Peake lucidly explores quantum physics, medicine, psychology, certain aspects of occult thinking, gnosis, history and more besides, too progressively and comprehensively builds a picture that supports his thesis. It's a book that needed writing because, as I have noted many times, many disciplines are coming together to point to some startling conclusions about reality and Peake manages to communicate the complex with simplicity.

Quantum mechanics was already an old and solidly established subject when the first edition of this book appeared in 1966. The context in which a graduate text on quantum mechanics is studied today has changed a good deal, however. In 1966, most entering physics graduate students had a quite limited exposure to quan� tum mechanics in the form of wave mechanics. Today the standard undergraduate curriculum contains a large dose of elementary quantum mechanics, and often intro� duces the abstract formalism due to Dirac. At that very time, however, John Bell's famous theorem broke the ice, and there has been a great flowering ever since, especially in the laboratory thanks to the development of quantum optics, and more recently because of the interest in quantum computing. This classic text provides a comprehensive exposition of the concepts and techniques of quantum mechanics. The phenomena treated are sufficiently simple to allow the student to readily assess the validity of the models so that attention is not deflected from the heart of the subject. To that end, the book concentrates on systems that can either be solved exactly or be handled by well-controlled, plausible approximations. With few exceptions, this means systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. The exceptions are many―electron atoms, the electromagnetic field and the Dirac equation. The inclusion of the last two topics reflects the belief that every physicist should now have some knowledge of these cornerstones of modern physics.

This new edition has been completely revised and rewritten throughout, but retains the clarity and readability of the first edition.

Born in Vienna, Kurt Gottfried emigrated to Canada in 1939 and received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955. He is a professor emeritus of physics at Cornell University, and had previously been at Harvard University and at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the coauthor of Concepts of Particle Physics (with V.F. Weisskopf) and of Crisis Stability and Nuclear War. Gottfried has done research in both nuclear and particle physics; he has an active interest in arms control and human rights and is a founder and currently the Chair of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Tung-Mow Yan, originally from Taiwan, received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University in 1968. He has been a member of the Cornell University faculty since 1970 after spending two years as a research associate at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. He has conducted research in many areas of elementary particle physics.

Not for the uninitiated!!!

This is a high level, formal treatment of quantum mechanics. It is very elegant and there are many things in this book that are not covered in many other grad level quantum text books. For example, the nice treatment of the Kepler problem using F+, F- operators, a lengthy discussion of the interpration of QM/entangled states, etc, or a good treatment of the Landau levels in both symmetric and landau gauge. The emphasis on the ideas of the rotation group, Wigner-Eckhart, etc are also very nice. However, user beware, the textbook skips steps, sometimes lacks clarity, and may assume mathematics and quantum that you dont have yet. This is not a casual read. You should have a piece of paper in front of you to work through the steps. But I can assure you that in the end it is very worthwhile and gives you a glimpse into what makes quantum mechanics very beautiful and elegant.

If you have read Griffiths before this you may not be prepared. Try Shankar first then move onto this book.

This is the most complete book on the fundamentals of the quantum mechanics, it's focused on the theoretical foundations and too on the principal experimental facts behind the theory, but it's a graduate level, demanding some background on the wave mechanics often viewed at undergraduate courses on quantum mechanics...the beginning formal mathematical framework can be complemented by Sakurai's Modern Quantum Mechanics but the main theory there is no other book with the same level of insight and ingenuity. Highly recommended!

Graduate level quantum mechanics textbook with an emphasis on scattering theory

Gottfried was the primary textbook used in the two semester graduate level quantum mechanics course that I took as a graduate student almost forty years ago. My professor was a theorist in high energy physics, so naturally he chose a textbook with a strong emphasis on scattering theory. This is probably also the reason, as noted by the famous Irish quantum theorist John S. Bell, that the library at CERN had so many copies of Gottfried. See Bell's essay "Against measurement" in John S. Bell on the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics for this observation.

Chapters 12-17 (pp.94-164) provide an introduction to scattering theory in this 494 page book, which includes the definition of cross section, Born and Eikonal approximations, partial waves, the delta shell potential, resonance scattering, and the coulomb field. Chapter 40 deals with invariance principles as applied to scattering of spin 1/2 particles. Chapter 43 treats scattering of identical particles. Chapter 56 addresses scattering and transitions in a continuum. Chapter 57 considers collision phenomena in the Born approximation. Gottfried also does a good job in providing a large number of useful figures that relate to scattering. Some figures describe scattering geometry while others plot differential cross section as a function of scattering angle.

Although I found Gottfried to be a useful textbook for its treatment of scattering, I do consider it to be the most suitable introduction to quantum mechanics for first year physics graduate students. I prefer Schiff's Quantum Mechanics, with Baym's Lectures On Quantum Mechanics (Lecture Notes and Supplements in Physics) as a supplement. In particular, I prefer Schiff and Baym's treatment of the Dirac bra/ket notation.

An idealist, a mystic, a poet, an inspiring teacher, Swami Paramananda had the gift of inspiring and of providing practical instruction in spiritual living.

In a time when we are surrounded by sounds, these teachings…simple, yet profound…remind us of why silence has always been so important in spiritual life. Swami Paramananda was a student of the great Swami Vivekananda who first brought the message of Vedanta to the U.S. He established two Vedanta Centers, one in Boston and one in L.A., that are still flourishing. All of Paramananda's writings have been spiritually sustaining for me and my family for decades and I could not praise them too highly. He is a central figure in the introduction of Indian philosophy into the U.S. and I highly recommend this book to all.
