From Publishers Weekly
If He's Just Not That into You told a woman how to spot a man who's not really interested in a relationship with her—and how to deal with it proactively—this follow-up is for those, male and female, who've been blindsided by a breakup after thinking Everything Is Fine. Speaking less this time from a guy's perspective and more as someone who has been dumped and survived, Behrendt tackles the often inevitable symptoms of a broken attachment: the obsessive thinking (and calling and e-mailing), the crying, the debilitating depression (and its effects on one's job performance), the crazy acting-out, the food and spending issues, the friend burnout. This time, Behrendt is aided by his wife, who offers her own breakup stories, with the two together serving as a constant reminder that one can love again. The book is padded with not-so-funny vignettes, and anecdotal letters from readers are answered in a rather wearying Dear Abby style. There's little new or insightful, but Behrendt's frankness—never too harsh—is as winning as ever, and the title is catchy. Everything is more or less in place for this burgeoning franchise.

From Booklist
Behrendt, coauthor of the wildly popular dating guide He's Just Not That into You (2004), teams up with his wife to offer a how-to guide for coping when a relationship goes south. Both Greg and his wife, Amiira, went through extremely traumatic, drawn-out breakups before finding happiness with each other, and they share the stories of what they did wrong (and what they eventually did right) as they go through the basics of how to survive a breakup: stop calling him or waiting for him to call, don't sit at home moping, avoid wearing sweats (unless exercising), and find a friend to help you through it. They also include letters seeking advice and Greg's responses to them, breakup horror stories, and "psycho confessionals," real tales of women who went too far in reacting to a breakup. The authors take a lighthearted and positive tone throughout their boisterous guide; expect demand from the many readers who made He's Just Not That into You a hit. Kristine Huntley

THE Break-up Bible -- I am a Superfox and you are a Superfox, too!
By 6chickadees
Break-ups SUCK!!!! How can a guy that you are not so sure about at the very beginning of the relationship cause so much heartache at the end? Holy moly – I would do anything to make this pain go away.

I thought I was dating “the one”. Promises were made, he gave me a ring, we were in love (or so I thought!). Then, without warning, he needed a “break” (read “break-up”, I am sure he was just trying to make it sound better). What on earth had I done? There were no warning signs. He went from lovey-dovey to “I can’t talk to you anymore” within a few hours.

What now??? I felt like a piece of me had been torn off. I went through the motions of life, but I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t concentrate. Nothing seemed the same. And I was shocked that others could continue on with life – couldn’t they see how much life had changed (at least for me)? This guy & the break-up was all I could think about.

Then along comes this book. It was a gift from a friend. I crawled into bed and read it in just one sitting (although I wasn’t really sitting, I was curled into a ball). It was like salve on an open wound. I laughed, I cried, I read and re-read. This book was about me and for me. It was like a good friend who knew exactly what to say. It became my break-up bible.

Each chapter had helpful tips to move on. I realized right away that I was living in a “boyfriend torture chamber” and I had to remove all memories of him. I had to get rid of his old texts and stop re-reading them. I had to take his pictures off of my phone. I had to stop stalking his social media to find out if he moved on (accept the fact he is dating Heidi Klum and MOVE-ON! LOL!).

And although I did not see any warning signs, as the book said, he must have left the relationship much earlier. I thought about relationships I had ended. I realized I usually was “over them” a few weeks before I finally broke it off. And when I finally “did the deed”, I felt more relief than anything else. And after the relationship was over, I really did not want to talk to the guy again. That helped me look at this relationship in the same way.

Once I had some time under my belt (the first few weeks SUCKED), I was able to see the relationship for what it was. Not so great after all… like shoes I was convincing myself felt good, but after I got them off and the blisters healed, I realized how much hurt they caused. Like the book said, I was looking at the relationship through rose-colored glasses. Take the glasses off – oh my! The relationship really wasn’t that awesome.

I did take the book’s advice and instead of moping around the house, I spent extra time at the gym, I reorganized my closets, I found time and a place to meditate (it was better than “Netflix and chill” with the ex-guy), and looked into graduate school. At first, I was just going through the motions, but after a few weeks, a new “rockin’” me was emerging. Yay me!!

In addition to this book, I got “Ignore the Guy, Get the Guy, The Art of No Contact” (I highly recommend that book, too). Now, this ex-boyfriend has come sniffing around again. I am not sure I want him back. But, with these 2 books’ help, I feel in control of my emotions. I will not be an option. I will not be a booty call. I will not be a psycho ex-girlfriend. I want to be remembered as “the one that got away”.

I highly recommend this book. I plan to have a few copies on hand to give to girlfriends after a break-up. I am a Superfox and you are a Superfox too!!!

It is painful and it sucks
By derpthederp
I am going through a break up right now and I am seeing a therapist. It is painful and it sucks. I didn't have much a hope a book could help, but this book is full of good advise, humor, and really makes me look at the relationship in a different way. It helped me step back and see what was really wrong with the relationship and look at it from a more 'real' perspective. I am still working my way through the book and doing all the exercises it suggests. I'm not saying it will cure my heartbreak but it is a step in a more positive direction then what I was going towards. Some of the 'truths' in the books were hard for me to wrap my head around. I am reading the book in sections to allow myself to fully comprehend and absorb it. I highly recommend this book for anyone going through a painful break up.

Should've Known When I Saw the Cliché Ice Cream Pint on the Front
By Sarah
Bought this book after my 3 year relationship ended (with the man I thought I was going to marry and my first love) and I wasn't too impressed. I'm 25 years old by the way, for reference. It helped to read other people's stories including that of the authors, who are married. It just was a bit too goofy for me with the calling of the audience 'Pretty Lady' and 'Crazy Pants' etc. If that's your thing, you'll love this book. But to me it all felt a bit too juvenile. It also bugged me the way the tone of it was more harsh; I know they say it's tough love but everyone has a different circumstance and I think the book lobs every woman into the category of "he's not interested in you, he doesn't want anything to do with you and he's wanted to leave your ass for a long time now".
Best part is the end where there's the tips to reinvent yourself so to speak and to love you and 'do you' essentially. Which I think we're all guilty of giving up - essentially what we love and we consume ourselves with our partner.

Who wants my copy? Haha
I found true help and amazing advice from this man on YouTube, Matthew Hussey - I highly highly recommend you to search the word breakup and him on YouTube and save yourself the money on this silly book. Also, The Alchemist. Read it

Simply the best book for pasta recipes and unique masturbation techniques I've found
By Frequent Amazonian
This book covers everything a single man living in Italy needs to know about cooking and self pleasure. Do not judge a book by its cover, this is not about wearing sheep as backpacks or anything weird like that. The information presented is clear and straight to the point and will teach you everything you need to know about cooking pasta, masturbating, or selecting the best ball harness to suit your needs. I used Google translate to read this book since I don't speak Italian but was able to figure most of it out. The chapter on Fleshlights is particularly insightful. Enjoy!

Life-changing and life-affirming!
By Philip Welsh
If, like me, you woke up the morning after your 45th birthday with a Wagnerian hangover, a dead stripper in your bed, and a clear sense that the corporate ladder was a soul-quenching climb with absolutely nothing worthwhile at the top, then this life-changing little tome may be the book for you. Do I read Italian? No. Did it matter? Not in the least.

Hint: Sheep like to be held GENTLY (and sung to) when you drape them over your shoulders. Also, don't forget to apply liberal amounts of SPF15 to the parts of your face, chest and back that the sheep doesn't cover -- that hot Italian sun can be unforgiving.

If like me, you love cooking lamb and masturbating, but sometimes get bored with the same old wank-and-shank, then look no further brother! This book is the holy grail of all texts in the italian cooking/masturbation category. Great find! 5 Stars.

To be enjoyed with some caution.
By Amazon Customer
AGE: 6-10

FORMAT: 150+ stories retold on 2-8 lavishly illustrated pages each.

FAITHFULNESS: This is a definite retelling, with considerable elaborations which are at times rather nonsensical. (For example in the tower of Babel story, "If a workman asked for bricks, his helper gave him mortar." Huh?) In addition, there are occasional weird editorializations and unorthodox interpretations applied to a few stories. For example, the authors express some doubt about the possibility of demonic possession, meaning that they think Jesus' miracle with the herd of pigs...wasn't. I prefer closer readings of the text, leaving any interpreation up to the parent--or at least faithfully following SOME orthodox theology instead of randomly picking and choosing! Fortunately, fewer than 10% of stories have this kind of problem. There is also a small amount of whitewashing.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The gouache illustrations are lavish and gorgeous. There are a few just plain bizarre choices--like making North African Egyptian black!--but the paintings are beautiful and add much to the stories.

USEFULNESS: This is a very useful version with some caveats when it comes to the writers' idiosyncratic interpretations and editorializations of a few stories. Good for stories but not an appropriate source for devotionals. To be enjoyed with some caution.

Bible Stories for Children
By Tommy Tester
I purchased this book in February, 1989 and have read it cover to cover at least six times for each of my three children. It is the best children's Bible that I have found. Children are interested as early as 3-4 and remain interested through 10-12. It is outstanding. I recommend reading from start to end, two chapters per night. It is well illustrated, Biblically sound, and well written with appropriate size print. Enjoy and God Bless. Makes a wonderful Christmas Gift.

Wonderful text, frightening illustrations
By Grandma C
I very much like the philosophy behind the retelling of these Bible stories which are "geared to the level of the young child" while "adhering closely to the flow and language of the biblical text". What spoils this book as a gift for a young child, as I had intended, is that I find the illustrations too often ominous, with dark, intense colors. The human figures are heavy-limbed and often elderly, angry or anguished, and there are many crowd scenes. According to the introduction, "These are pictures that will stay in the reader's mind throughout his life." But the illustration, as an example, of Daniel being thrown into the lion's den shows snarling lions, teeth bared, in the foreground, with soldiers about to roll a stone across the remaining light of the mouth of the cave above. The story of Daniel in the Lion's Den which I retain in my head from childhood is one of David standing calmly among the pacified lions.

You Know They're Here, by Paul J. Kenyon

"You Know They're Here" is a true story of actual events of a haunted house experienced by this author in the mid-seventies. A family with four children was eventually driven from their home after an unsuccessful exorcism was performed to cleanse their house of unwanted spirits. Kenyon befriended the Dandy family and initially became an evening 'guard' helping to keep the curious from trespassing on their property. The events he experienced for more than a year heightened his sense of the paranormal to frightening levels. For a time, Paul, being the aggressor toward the energies of the house, held the interest of one of the more malevolent entities. "You Know They're Here" will have you sleeping with the lights on and have you second guessing your beliefs of the spirit world.

From the Author
Hello readers, Paul J Kenyon here. Initially You Know They're Here was only meant to be a personal achievement; I had no intentions of publishing the story. Clara Miller who lived in the infamous haunted house with her family suggested I send a copy to her publisher consideration. I waited a bit as I had personally edited the book and wasn't aware of the ins and outs of publishing.

Originally the book was over 1000 pages and I whittled it down to just over 500 after Virtual Book Worm accepted the book for publishing. The idea of finishing the story some 34 years after I'd started writing it was a "fun" thought for me. I included an abundance of information about my personal life as well as the local area where I'd grown up. Of course, many critics view that information as a distraction from the main theme of the story, "The haunted house in the hills of Hinsdale, New York. Most from the area enjoyed the references to local business and people, whereas many just felt it was too much information.

What transpired at the house during that year and a half I visited the Dandy family is all there, you just get a lot more information you might not care about if you're not from the Western New York area. I hope you'll accept the idea that this book was for me, but I'm sure you'll find enough about the problems of the paranormal that ultimately caused the Dandy family to flee their beloved country home.

Badly written
By Sandy Rhoad
Another person "cash'n in" on someone else's problems just to make a buck. This is the most poorly written book I have EVER read. NO ONE - and I mean not one person on earth - can remember every conversation they had at the age of 22 with their wife. A sample: I went to the fridge, got out the meat and cheese, made a sandwich. Walked across the floor and gave it to my wife. She picked it up and chewed and swallowed a bite. PLEASE --- boring to the extreme. Then he centers the paranormal things in the house around HIM even though his wife only worked with the woman who owned the house. Cashing in. Badly written, not totally true and to make it worse --- he's writing three more books. Not me - will not purchase nor read. This guy is NOT a writer. Don't waste the money. If you want to read about the happenings in the house get it from another source. HORRIBLE book.

Truly Interesting
By Larry M. Smith
One of the best haunt books i've read in a very long time. As a long time Olean, NY folk myself, i never knew what it was really about till i picked up this book (although i had heard bits here and there, just never the full force that this book has created). Mr. Kenyon very well details of events made this a classic in my heart, however, the down side is that not everything was put into the book after reading Clara's book, however, it doesnt hurt it at all, just wish some of the events from her book was in Mr. Kenyon's book. Anyways, this is a truly high reccomended book and will sure to bring back memories of Olean, NY old timers as well.

NOT scary, he can't decide if it should be a novel or non-fiction.
By Cali
Let me begin my review by saying that I have collected well over 200 books since the 1980's dealing with real-life hauntings. I grew up in an 'active' home and have seen many things I can't rationally explain and I am a firm believer in ghosts, spirits and apparitions.
That being said I felt compelled to offer my very first review on a paranormal book.
This book was one of the WORST I have had the misfortune of wasting my money on.
Let's start with the length and the inclusion of details and subplot story lines that have absolutely nothing to do with the supposed paranormal experiences of Mr Kenyon.
For instance, what was the purpose of going on and on about what he had for breakfast in the Fall of 1973 ? The eggs were scrambled, the toast was dry, the juice was bitter, it had too many seeds, etc....
This is just a small example of the seemingly endless wasted text on the author's daily life.
What was the purpose of the chapters-eating dialogue dealing with how he made all this money on the business's marble fixtures, etc, the feud he had with the man who sold him the business, what WAS that all about ? In the end did it contribute to the paranormal aspects of the story ? I kept waiting for it to be all tied in but in the end but that never happened.
It seems to me the reason it was included was so we, the readers, wouldn't think TOO badly of a seemingly healthy 21 year old with a fiancee' and baby on the way, doing nothing more than playing in a band once a week and working at a sub shop part time for a few weeks while his fiancee' got up to go to work every day.
He goes on and on about how great his relationship is with this saint of a woman, even giving us the full dialogue of inane conversations that were so corny I couldn't help but roll my eyes and cringe a bit.
He alludes to this wonderful relationship ending at some point, yet in the end of the book, when he is wrapping up, he fills us in on the rest of the characters in the story, but never updates us on his OWN story.

Let's get to the aspect of the scariness of this book. If you are looking for a good and scary narrative of a real-life haunting, don't bother with this book.
There was nothing remotely scary about it, a few so-called sightings of apparitions, a few whispered words, but nothing that makes you want to sleep with the lights on and jump at every sound in the house.
I got the impression that the writer wanted to cash in on the recent popularity of the ghost hunting genre and Mrs. Dandy's book. It seems he pretty much used his few tepid experiences and fleshed it out with totally inane and trivial dialogue trying to convince us that he played a major part in the story of this active home. Most of the book feels made-up and over dramatized.

Shame on you Mr. Kenyon.

A pure, passionnate and hot love story !
By Latitia Brire
Winter's Gift is the second book in the Bistro La Bohme series that I read (Falling for Emma) and just like the first one, I absolutly LOVED it ! I liked the two main characters and I could care about them and their story quickly and deeply. There is a lot for you to love in this book but here is what you need to know !

Strong, smart and charming character, Anton made me think of something rare and beautiful, a gift Anna couldn't stop herself from wanting... in every way ! Though she never wanted something serious or romantic, she slowly realizes Anton is beyond everything she expected from men. But can she trust herself with feelings she carefully avoided for so long? What about her secrets and everything that she is?

For Anton, I could say it was love at first sight (for me, at first words !). There was attraction, beauty and sincerity about the two of them. It was also hot, sexy and amusing. And of course really intense ! They were both so moving and realistic and I enjoyed their deep connection and complicity.

The writing was perfect and beautiful. The story was well developped and gripping. I loved the sweet and light French romantism's touch ! I also wanted to know what would happen to Anton and Anna so much that I finished reading the book in less than five hours. So this is a short read that you will appreciate easily and deeply ! I think you shouldn't miss this very good read that became one of my coup de coeur ! Alix gifts us a hot and unforgettable Romance about letting go of the past, accepting love and trusting the pure, passionnate and genuine attraction that was just demanding to be felt.

Grab your copy of Winter's Gift now, you won't regret it !

Happy reading !

Another great romance in the Bistro La Boheme series...Recommended! :)
By Njkinny
Winter's Gift by Alix Nichols is the fifth book by the author that I have read and just like the previous books, I really enjoyed reading it!

The cover is attractive but I could not visualize Anton like the hero shown on the cover. The blurb is intriguing and made me eager to start on the book right away.

I have come to enjoy and feel close to the Bistro La Boheme series and when I picked up Winter's Gift I was excited to read Anton's story whom I had met the first time in What If It's Love? book which tells the story of his daughter, Lena. Anton had come out as a ruthless businessman, loyal towards his family and over protective towards his daughter but in this book, I got to see a whole other side to his personality. He is a man still incomplete and seeking true love which he gets when he meets Anna but is Anna truly his one true love?

Anna is a woman hurt and trying to fight the odds in her life. When she meets Anton, she doesn't want to fall in love with him. Why? You need to read the book to know the answer to this. :)

I loved the totally unexpected twist and at first thought that I had misunderstood but that wasn't so. This is a love story written differently which made me love it all the more and I enjoyed reading it thoroughly. Alix has come a long way from her first book, You're the One. Her writing style is more mature, more engaging and a lot more crisp. She is daring with her books and takes risks in her stories which make her books different from the other conventional romances. A very talented author, I am glad I have read her books and look forward to her future stories.

All in all, Winter's Gift was a quick read which held my interest right till the end. It made me smile, laugh, go all misty eyed and then fervently hope for a happily-ever-after for my two new favourite protagonists. 4.5 out of 5 to it and strongly recommended to all romance lovers. Go grab this book and enjoy reading a heartfelt romance with a twist.

Contemporary Art: A Very Short Introduction, by Julian Stallabrass

Contemporary art has never been so popular, but what is its role today and who is controlling its future? Contemporary art is supposed to be a realm of freedom where artists shock, break taboos, flout generally received ideas, and switch between confronting viewers with works of great emotional profundity and jaw-dropping triviality. But away from shock tactics in the gallery, there are many unanswered questions. Who is really running the art world? What effect has America's growing political and cultural dominance had on art?
Here Julian Stallabrass takes us inside the international art world to answer these and other controversial questions, and to argue that behind contemporary art's variety and apparent unpredictability lies a grim uniformity. Its mysteries are all too easily explained, its depths much shallower than they seem. Contemporary art seeks to bamboozle its viewers while being the willing slave of business and government. This book is your antidote and will change the way you see contemporary art.

About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

Toil and trouble?
By The Lucid Librarian
Strictly speaking this small text did not offer a very short introduction to contemporary art. What this small text does offer is - some - introduction to contemporary art - and - Julian Stallabrass' view on the economic and political nature of contemporary art, the necessary "evils" of its relationship to fashion and money, and current trends in the art world. The blurb on the inside cover of the text is more accurate: "What is contemporary about contemporary art? What effect do politics and big business have on art? And who really runs the art world? ...an exploration of the global art scene".

This is a well written and referenced work with biting but not bitter insights that struck this reader as more of a polemic investigation rather than an investigation into the nature of contemporary art. Once that agenda is understood, the reader is drawn to gaze through Stallabrass' intense eyeglass into the art world system as it stands presently, with contemporary art examined almost as a by-product of that system. The art biennale scene discussed in chapter two "New world order" benefits from the strongest scrutiny and offered this reader an observation that only one who tracks this global art scene could offer. This chapter highlights the idealistic desire to widen cultural horizons and the uncomfortable hypocrisy that can arise from that.

"What I have sketched out here is the idea that the much-trumpeted diversity of the globalized art world may conceal other, newer uniformities." (p49)

Stallabrass discusses contemporary art and makes some key observations about how artists address consumerism, mass production, and commodification in chapter three "Consuming culture".

"Yet generally in the 1990s consumerist spectacle - suitably spun for art-world-taste - prevailed over critical thinking about the interrelationship between production and consumption." (p69).

By the final chapter "Contradictions" one is left slightly wanting; but this is not a bad thing. This simply means there is more investigation required (and that this reader's appetite was whetted for more). Stallabrass reaches into some interesting conundrums for contemporary artists and their world but doesn't attempt to resolve them or predict the future.

"This situation is marked, however, by distinct tensions and contradictions. We have seen that art's uselessness - its main use - is being sullied by the particular needs of government and business. In a linked development, art's elitism is challenged by the attempt to widen its appeal: business values art for its exclusivity, while states are generally interested in the opposite, and wish to widen its ambit. Finally art's means of production, increasingly technological, have come into conflict with its archaic relations of production." (p126).

Stallabrass seems to think that contemporary art has been captured and diminished by state and capitalist globalist agendas and makes the case for artistic freedom.

"It is easy to see that the conditions for that freedom no longer exist in the art world: artists are snug in the market's lap; works are made to court the public; sufficient autonomy is maintained to identify art as art, but otherwise most styles and subject-matter are indulged in; success generally comes swiftly, or not at all." (p134/5)

What would extend this discussion would be to look into what makes this tense relationship between those with the money to fund art and those that create it today any different to the time of the Medici. Is it simply that the idealism and rhetoric in notions of globalisation (whether economic or artistic) really does not address the power relationships between those with the advantage and those without and what happens when that power imbalance is overlooked (and a colonising or homogenising effect occurs)? Is it that the wave of mass culture and production (in material and intangible) form is really going to put notions of exclusive and rarity to test in the art world, and if so, is that necessarily going to diminish or transform art (in Western terms)? If that is the case, is there reason to revisit ideas of the power (and freedom) to challenge (as art has in the past) and the value and potency of that?

Stallabrass' text highlights the cosiness (and attendant sacrifices of expression) and the dangers (tiredness and impotency) of too close an alignment with two of society's more powerful estates. This text is not exactly controversial in its criticism, but it is definitely thought-provoking in its insights and the issues its raises.

A rather strange book that seems to assume that you know about contemporary art already
By Michael Huggins
Reading this book reminded me of a comment by C.S. Lewis, I believe, in "The Abolition of Man"--something to the effect of "What would you think if you sent your son to the dentist, and he came back with his cavities unfilled but his head stuffed full of the dentist's obiter dicta on the Baconian theory and bimetallism?"

It reminds me, as well, of an article I read some years ago about a college professor of American literature who was supposed to be teaching a course in Hawthorne and Melville but filled it so full of the professor's own views on Marxism that the students eventually referred to the course as "Ho-thorne and Mao-ville." They would certainly recognize the same tendency in the present work.

This book is, quite simply, mistitled. It is most certainly *not* a very short introduction to contemporary art. An introduction to contemporary art would have covered the following topics:

1. What is meant by the phrase "contemporary art"? Does it mean simply all art produced in the last 10 years, or does it have a specific meaning, as "modern art" does?

2. What are some typical themes (e.g., sexuality, alienation, the cruelty of war), motifs, and forms (e.g., photography, sculpture, "found art," performance, etc.) of contemporary art?

3. Who are the major artists working in contemporary art? What are their similarities and differences?

4. Who are the major writers on contemporary art, whether journalists, academics, or others? What are their areas of agreement or disagreement?

5. How has contemporary art been received by society at large, and what influence, if any, does contemporary art seem to wield in society?

6. Since this is a "very short introduction," what should you read next, to get more depth in this topic?

Topic 6 is never covered at all. Topic 1 is not made clear. Topics 2, 3, and 5 are addressed in chapter 1 and in passing throughout the book. Topic 4 is mentioned in the next-to-last chapter.

The closest thing to what I would have expected as a sort of introductory statement to the book's overall subject is this:

"It is a basic art-world orthodoxy, echoed just about everywhere, that contemporary art is ungraspably complex and diverse. The variety of contemporary forms, techniques, and subject-matter in art is indeed bewildering. The conventional media of painting, sculpture, and print-making have been overlaid with installation and `new media', which can encompass anything from online art to computer-controlled sound environments. Artists cultivate for themselves images that range from traditional guru or shaman roles to beady-eyed, tongue-in-cheek chancer and careerist, and personas that include starstruck adolescent girls and engorged, axe-wielding psychotics. Art's concerns are also various, touching upon feminism, identity politics, mass culture, shopping, and trauma. Perhaps art's fundamental condition is to be unknowable (that concepts embodied in visual form can encompass contradiction), or perhaps those that hold to this view are helping to conceal a different uniformity."

This is the book's nearest approach to an introductory statement. Do you know where it is actually found?

The next-to-last chapter. I'm not kidding.

We are also treated to sentences like this, on the next page after the passage I just cited:

"The wide influence of Greenberg's sweeping account of the development of modern art as a Hegelian progress towards formal abstraction helped stimulate Pop Art, its explicit refutation."

Umm, that's nice, especially if you have any idea who the heck Greenberg was (the reference is to Clement Greenberg, 1909-1994, an influential American art critic). As a general reader, I know only just enough to understand this reference, though I have not read Greenberg's "sweeping account," or anything else by him. In any case, educating the reader on such boring details is apparently not the author's true interest.

The book should have been titled "The Economics and Sociology of Art, Considered with Reference to the Relation of Contemporary Art to State and Corporate Power."

Now that is a long title, but it honestly describes the book. The author, a lecturer at a British art institute, has very strong views about some things, particularly capitalism and globalism. The book's basic thesis is as follows:

"No matter how radical and even shocking it may seem, art produced within the last 15 years has actually been coopted into political, economic, and social schemes that have little to do with art, per se. Governments value it because it seems to heal the social fractures caused by capitalism. Corporations value it because embracing and promoting art and artists seems to make the corporate sponsors visionary, instead of merely exploitative and profit-hungry. A few artists reap large rewards from this, as do art critics and exhibit curators, who, whatever their pretense to support spiritual and cultural enlightenment or the progress of humanity, actually construct a sort of periodic entertainment for a well-heeled set of glitterati who travel the world to biennial art shows, some of them held in cities where most of the inhabitants can't afford to attend; the glitterati are seen as part of an elegant and fashionable milieu, while the works they view are bid up into stratospheric price levels that only the wealthiest can afford."

A few other points are made, but I believe that if Julian Stallabrass, the author of the book, read this synopsis, he would agree that this expresses the core of what he wants to say in his book. He deplores capitalism and globalism, first, last, and always. He is probably too sophisticated to be a doctrinaire advocate of Marxism, which conspicuously failed to deliver the utopia it seemed to promise, but he is quite sure what he *doesn't* like and misses no opportunity to denigrate what he calls "neo-liberalism."

This is all very well and may be more true than not, but it does not amount to an introduction to contemporary art.

What would you think of a book entitled "A Very Short Introduction to Shakespearean Drama" which engaged in detailed and intense discussions of the Elizabethan discontent, the cruelty of the conquistadors, the adventures of Sir Francis Drake, Raleigh's failed expedition to find gold, the unmarried state of Queen Elizabeth I, Essex's attempted coup, the discovery of Bermuda, the bisexuality of King James I, cod fishing off Newfoundland, the poisoning of Sir Thomas Overbury, and God only knows what else--but all the while, MacBeth, Julius Caesar, The Tempest, Hamlet, King Lear, and Romeo and Juliet were mentioned only in passing, and with an air that seemed to assume that of course you had read and assimilated these works already and that the author need not be so tiresome as to actually analyze them at any length--all in the service of the author's nearly obsessive thesis that Shakespeare's plays were the unwitting handmaid of colonial oppression of indigenous peoples?

If you had a book like that about Shakespearean drama, it would be analogous to this book. I get the impression that Cambridge University Press may well have asked this author for "A Very Short Introduction to Contemporary Art," but he wrote what he darn well felt like writing about and turned it in, and they couldn't persuade him to revise it.

Now in fact, the relation of the artist to wealth and power, as well as the way art reflects (or distracts) its contemporary public, are, indeed, provocative and worthwhile topics. After I had read only a few pages, I thought, "Correct or not, does this author believe that capitalism is a new and unique villain? That artists were never oppressed in the past, or at the mercy of wealthy patrons? What about Michelangelo and Julius II? What about Vermeer and his patrons? Does the author believe that meretricious appreciation of art never existed before our own day? What about the very interesting lecture I heard a few years ago to the effect that while Vermeer was painting scenes of cool tranquility, the actual Dutch society in which he lived was rent by bitter political differences, sometimes resulting in violence, as well as foreign invasion? Wouldn't an historical perspective be worthwhile?"

Sorry, folks. The author cares for none of this. Nothing has ever been as evil, corrupting, or oppressive as capitalism and globalism. Art has been coopted by them. Capitalism and globalism are evil. Art thinks it is free, but it is the "freedom" of a lapdog. Capitalism and globalism are evil. Art enlisted in the service of political engagement may, to be sure, result in its own follies, but one thing is sure: capitalism and globalism are evil.

And in case you haven't been paying attention, capitalism and globalism are evil.

The book is sort of interesting, but more as a guide to the state of the author's thinking than as a description of contemporary art as art. This is actually one of a series of several dozen "Very Short Introduction" books offered by the same publisher on such varied topics as history, philosophy, the classics, and so forth, but if they are all as disdainfully indifferent to their title and ostensible purpose as this offering, I might think twice about ordering any of them.

Young artists beware!
By Yoav Weiss
This is an excellent little book! Not much of an introduction as it assumes quite a lot of previous knowledge of the field; but an eye-opening Marxist analysis of the mechanics and machinations of the art world and of its myriad connections with the larger economic and political structures within which it thrives or dies.

For example the paragraph that should be carved on the lintels of all art schools doors: "...the overall nature of the arts economy is generally disavowed by its participants, particularly artists, who overlook or deny their orientation toward financial reward. Artists are singularly ill-informed about their prospects for success, are prone to taking risks, are poor but come from wealthy backgrounds... and tend to subsidize their art-making out of other earnings. These features... cause the art world to be permanently over-crowded, making the poverty of artists a structural feature."

Stallabrass discusses how the multi-cultural fashion in the arts serves (apart from a few third-world artists) the ideological campaign of the Neo-Liberal economy and the multi-national corporations. He touches on how academe creates one kind of artist while the market creates another. Both types are adapted to their niches in the economic structure and neither enjoys the freedom artists are generally assumed to gain in exchange for their frustration and poverty.

A fascinating and eye-opening read.
