Henry Ford jump-started the age of the automobile with the first assembly-line car in 1908: the Model T. For the next one hundred years, the automobile would evolve from chugging workhorse to tailfin-era showboat to sleek status symbol, stamped with a Mercedes Benz hood ornament. Once a novel invention of wonder, the car of the Postwar Era grew into a necessity of the modern age, a key to the freedom promised by the open road. So various were the choices of colors and features offered to American car buyers, that by 1960 all their possible permutations (by one formula) exceeded the number of molecules on the earth...
20th Century Classic Cars offers a lush visual history of the automobile, decade-by-decade, via 500-plus print advertisements from the Jim Heimann Collection. Advertising has always been the dream work of industry, and nowhere is this more evident than in the world of auto advertising. Narrated with introductory and chapter text by New York Times automotive writer Phil Patton, as well as an illustrated timeline and sidebars, this volume highlights the technological innovations, major manufacturers and dealers, influential historical events, and the influence of popular culture on car design. The car is an indicator of more than mere technological innovation; its trends are a reflection of the cultural zeitgeist, whether in the form of a VW Beetle or a road-ready Hummer. The Stone Age, the Bronze Age ours could be called the Automobile Age, and this collection puts you in the driver's seat through the 20th century.

ISBN-13: 978-3836514637
This book has 400 pages, index with vehicles,Beautifully illustrated,I got it just for the cover, which has "The Shark"Concept Corvette By Chevrolet(Mako Shark I)before I got the newer Book version with the Ugly Volkswagen Beetle(Bug)http://www.amazon.com/20th-Century-Classic-Cars-Automotive/dp/3836546159/ref=pd_sim_b_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1V7RZGZ8E7VZWVT4XSGD which is 592 pages, same publisher Taschen,ISBN-13: 978-3836546157.The Book is heavy but not a huge Hardcover as for length, the Ads featured herein are of the Author's collection and while there are some Foreign Cars in it the overall focus is American, ads placed in America which I like. Some VW,Porsche,Mercedes-Benz,Audi,Quirky Ads and great ones and not so great ones. Some Full page Spreads,Color basically throughout,Not enough Corvette Coverage in My opinion,I have the actual ad of One Corvette ad which in the book seems it is missing the other part which is the Chevrolet Titan 90 Semi Truck, unless more likely it was a alternate ad,not much reading just a timeline with small descriptions for each era,I did not appreciate the authors' bias/Regarding the 80s with the ad-verbatim "Greed is Good" garabage(80s Myth.)overall find it for a good price and cheap like I did and In good condition and its a worthy addition to Automotive library even if it does not represent across the board models.

don't let this one slip by!

As a collector of vintage automobile ads I was happy to see Taschen add this work to its catalog. Almost everything they produce is well done and reasonably priced. This title is no exception. In fact, I would have to say, that given the generous discount Amazon offers - it's a steal. This is a large book that presents the ads to their best advantage. And although the images can be less than perfect, one has to remember they were reproduced from older magazines that lacked todays printing technology. The images are largely artist's renderings, produced at a time when photography was not as widely employed in automobile advertising. My only complaint is, and this is a rather personal consideration, I would have rather they focused entirely on vehicles produced prior to 1960 with a greater emphasis on those classics from the Golden Age (20s & 30s). I recognize, however, Taschen is not marketing to an audience of one, so, I forgive them. There is little available in this field and even fewer offerings as nicely produced. A definite must have for car enthusiasts and automobile ephemera collectors alike. - Thanks Taschen

Fascinating book - lots more than just pictures.
By Quilter
I bought this book as a gift for my husband, who loves cars. It's a fascinating book. My husband keeps it on the coffee table, picks it up and gets engrossed in it whenever he has time, and keeps going back to it. He gets out a magnifying lens to read some of the tinier print, he is that interested. I was reading Dennis Lehane's novel, The Given Day, which mentions several WWI era cars, the Auburn and the Oakland, and my husband was able to show me pictures of both. My husband has a library of bargain books of photos of cars and other vehicles and enjoys perusing them all from time to time, but this is book has a lot more to offer, worth buying at full price.
